I want to develop some practical skills in BDC. How can I access a system?

Do I need to have BW experience to work with SAP BDC?

I do not have BW experience but I see it is mentioned a lot whenever I read about BDC. So now I am a bit concerned I have chosen to study a topic that I will struggle with.
