Whats the difference between partner function and partner function role

Partner Function in SAP CRM are the terms for describing people with whom you do business. Customers can also be referred to as sold-to parties, clients, patients or tenants. Partner functions describe those partners that you use in your organization. You can assign names freely.

Parnter function are defined in customizing:

SPRO->Customer Relationship Management->Basic Functions->Parner Processing->Define Partner Functions.

While you define a partner function, you can assign a (corresponding) relationship category. This relationship category is equivalent to the BP relationship category. For ex. the relationship category is responsible for is assigned to the partner function Employee Responsible

Now coming to Partner Function Roles, there nothing in CRM called Partner Function Roles, but there are Partner Roles in SAP R/3, where every Partner functions in CRM has to be mapped in customizing with Partner Roles in R/3. For example: In SAP CRM, the partner function Customer is used. In SAP R/3 the same partner function is known as Sold-to Party, then in customizing (SPRO->Customer Relationship Management->Basic Functions->Partner Processing->Data Transfer->Distribution of Partner Functions from CRM into SAP ECC), you can specify that SAP CRM customers are nothing but SAP R/3 sold-to parties.

partner function is the fucntion assigned to the particualr business partner in CRM according to which it will perform its function.

for example we have partner function activity partner

when we render this function to the particualr business partner that BP will act like an activity partner ,like we can use that BP for activity schedulingetc.

we define the access sequences for the partner functions and finally in the partner deternmination procedure we have these access sequences with partner functions involved .

we assign these PDP to the transaction and then BP we are using in transaction will act as partner function will perform the function which has been determined inside the partner determination procedure

besides Partner functions are terms that describe the people and organizations with whom you do business, and who are therefore involved in transactions. For example, when you create an activity, based on Customizing settings, it automatically includes the partner functions Activity Partner, Contact Person, and Person Responsible. Partner functions are always assigned to partner function categories, which are hard-coded in the system.

The system includes commonly used partner functions, but you can also define your own.

You use partner functions in transactions, in all areas of partner processing, and in some areas of business partner master data. For example:

You have a real estate business and define the function Tenant to refer to your customers.

Tenant is displayed in the header and Parties Involved assignment block in transactions, and in the Buying Center assignment block, when relevant.

It appears in the Customizing settings for access sequences, partner determination procedures, and partner teams.

It appears in business partner master data when you assign partners to partner functions when creating relationships between business partners, and when you enter excluded partner functions.

You define partner functions in Customizing for Customer Relationship Management, by choosing Basic Functions Partner Processing Define Partner Functions .

and regarding the partner function role we don have any partner function role as such ,what we have is BP role that is business partner role

and BP role is

the role the BP assume like sold to party role,customer role,prospect role,ship to party role

each role has its own view and functionality

like we use prospect role when we are identifying a prospect

the roles are meant to differentiate between the BPs

like some are customers,some are prospects and etc.
