Hi All,

I am trying to patch my SOLMAN 7.1 system. This is a fresh install running a Sybase database. I currently have kernel version 700.

I am using the latest SUM to patch the system.  During phase PREP_INPUT/KX_CPYCHK I receive this error:

However, my current version is:

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi Diana,

I've seen SUM do this kind of weird thing before.  As I see it, you have a couple of options:

1. ignore the error and carry on as the error says that it 'cannot determine' the kernel

2. put a new kernel in the download directory.

Oh, just check that your OS userid has rights to read the kernel directory.

Sometimes you even have to replace the kernel whilst the checks are running, but hopefully that won't be the case here.

HI Graham,

I've checked the authorizations, they are fine. I've tried putting the kernel in the download directory.

How do I ignore the error and move forward?

Thanks,

Diana

I would download the latest kernel and extract them into the <Upgrade_Directory>/abap/exe and repeat the phase in SUM.

Regan,

I had downloaded the latest SAPEXE, SAPEXEDB and DW into my download directory before I kicked off the upgrade....so that is the version (extracted) in my Upgrade Directory.

I'll have to agree with Reagan. I don't think it is using the kernel from your download directory. The stack contains an outdated kernel which probably wouldn't even work with ASE (patch level 402 or higher is required). Quoting SAP note 1758017

For all higher SP stack levels, the SAP kernel that comes with the installation media will be too old to be used for the upgrade/update procedure. SUM/abap/exe will thus contain an outdated kernel. You have to manually update the kernel in SUM/abap/exe in module "Extraction" of the upgrade/update process, but only after phase "SCANDIR_EXTRACT".

Hi Diana,

I was thinking about this overnight, and (as usual), agree with Regan and Samuli that you need to download a newer kernel into the SUM directory.  Also check whether you need the 721 kernel as opposed to the 720.

Thanks,

Graham

Hi,

At this point my 'active' kernel in my system is 7.20. Are you saying uncar the latest 7.21 SAPEXE, SAPEXEDB and DW into my SUM\exe directory?

(Hi Samuli!! 🙂  )

Thanks,

Diana

Hi Diana. It won't make a difference. You should stick to the 720_EXT kernel since it is known to work. A 721_EXT kernel update will have to happen before January 2015, though. Follow the instructions in SAP note 1758017. The timing of when you extract the right kernel is important, as indicated by the note.
