ABAP developer key

Hi,

I am new to ABAP, just wondering:

1. Is ABAP developer key registered within SAP organization or your own company's SAP Basis team?

2. If an ABAP developer working on two different applications for two different projects, does this developer needs two different developer keys? so one for each application? or just one developer key for both applications? or this developer's whole ABAP development life time just need one developer key?

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Hello.

1.- The developer key must be asked to SAP through ur SAP Basis team. They sould do it.

2.- The developer key is attached to the SAP's user name, so it is asked only once, doesnt matter the projects.

Regards

Hi Blue,

1 - Developer keys are registered per system instance and done through SAP Support Portal (SSCR keys). Therefore, first, you need to have permission to reach company's environment through portal but, second, also have permission to register dev keys (what normaly is restricted);

2 - as mentioned, developer keys are registered per instance; for example if you have 2 different environments in your organization and, therefore, 2 different development systems, the user ID would need to be registered twice, one per system.

Edgar

Thank you very much Edgar for your response.

I googled as well, seems for each installation (instance), a Developer Key is required. And indeed, my basis team give me the Developer Key for one of the installations. We have few projects (few installations), but the user name are all the same for the different projects. I am just wondering, does it mean no matter how the user name is defined in your organization, when you request SAP for the developer key, you have to provide the user name, for multi installations, so the user names could be the same or different, they are totally independent from each other, right?

Developer key is based on the user account name and the SAP installation number. Developer keys are registered for the SAP customer.

Hello Blue L

1)It is registered with sap organization only. But the process is normally taken care by basis team of respective project or company. Also if you have an s-user id to service market place you can very well request for the developer key (provided you have sufficient authorization to do that).

Here is the link to do:https://websmp205.sap-ag.de/sscr

step by step procedure: http://www.saptechies.com/how-to-generate-developers-key/

2) It may change if you are using different sap systems .But for sure no relations with different projects.

Thank you Blue L

Hi Alen,

Thank you very much for your answers.

I do have a s-user id (created by my Basis team) to the service marketplace, but seems I can't request a developer key. Does Basis team have the authority to restrict me from requesting a developer key from SAP?

Yes, the possibility to request SSCR keys is controlled with authorizations. SAP Service Marketplace Administrators and Super Administrators in your company can provide you the authorization.

Hello Blue L,

Basis team normally deals with granting developer keys.your assumption is right and normally they will request sap to give with specified authorization(limited) to developers.

we requests two types of key mainly from sap:

1)developer access key is given for a developers... which allows to do any customised programs in SAP server.

2)Access Key is needed if you need to make any changes in the SAP standard code.. or sap standard objects

also there are some other keys like migrations keys and so on:

So let say if some developers has the access key without proper approval or knowldge from system owneres he can very well edit the standard sap programs without knowing the after impact on sap systems. if this happens sap system will behave very badly!!

So thats the reason.if you have further queries please post it

Thank you blue l

Hi Blue,

Developer key is required, if the user id is used for the first time and while you are creating new object in the training or development server.

Developer key varies for each server but required to be provided for the first time while the object is created using a new user id.

It will be provided by your BASIS team

Just for enhancement and simplify the reply.

The Developer is same for one SAP installation number, if there are multiple products under same installation number then the same developer key will remain valid for al those systems.

For example you have installation number "0012345678 - SAP Netweaver 7.4" and PI, GRC, BW systems come under this installation number then the same key will be valid for all the systems if the user ID is also same. No matter what is the project and what type of system is.

Hi.

1. Developer key can be requested from SAP Support Portal by authorized users. After you've got one and entered it, it is stored in SAP table DEVACCESS. The same key is valid for the whole installation (for example DEV, TEST and PROD system), but only for identical user name.

2. You need a developer key for each installation (system line). You need a new key, if your user name changes or the installation number of the system line changes (for example when there is a new system owner).

Hi ,

Developer can get the developer key from the Basis Team where they will be requesting the same from SAP Support Portal . It is Unique for User. The same key will be used until the user name changes.

Irrespective of Installations the key is same with the same user name. Unless&Until you change user name the developer key remains constant.

Thanks,

Uday.

Hi Uday

Just for the correction; the developer key is not "Irrespective" of installation number, you have to change the developer key in case if the installation number changes (in addition to change of user name).

So, it depends on two things, user name, installation number.
