It is an add-on to the SAP back-end system, which enhances monitoring and error handling functionality in back-end. It provides a framework to implement logic in a way that business user can be provided more authority to monitor messages, instead of vanilla proxy and IDoc monitoring that is available.
Regarding your question about how to connect to AIF from SAP PI, there is no such configuration required in PI. You would still connect to SAP back-end application using proxy/IDoc, but the processing logic of proxy will be implemented within AIF framework.
