Problems installing SQL Anywhere 17

As suggested...

I recently downloaded SQL Anywhere 17 Developer Edition for Windows and tried to install it on my laptop.

I faced following issues:

1. In the middle of the install it says that its missing the MSVC Runtime and just crashed. It also at the same time said it was missing the JRE. It would be nice to know about that in the beginning so that I can download and install the pre-requisites.

2. After installing the above the install completed successfully. However trying to run SQL Central failed, because the installer didn't update the CLASSPATH variable. Adding it and then rebooting solved the issue.

I really hope that the paid version does not have those problems.

These issues will also be encountered for any SQL Anywhere window patch Build 7254 or newer.  

The MSVC Runtime requirement is documented. It is contained in the release notes (readme_EBF.html as Engineering Case 827584) as well as in the readme_xx.txt (where xx is the 2 character language code). Note that you can see the install image by loading the installer executable (which is a Package for the Web image)  in a tool like winrar.

Both document the following:

The SAP SQL Anywhere installation requires that the following Microsoft Visual
C++ Redistributable Packages be installed on the current systems before
running the installer.

X64 https://aka.ms/vs/17/release/vc_redist.x64.exe

These are compatible with Visual Studio 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022.

I know the installer reports the missing runtime as an error but that should not result in a crash.  

You should not set the classpath for SQL Central (or any of the java tools in SQLA).  The executable for the java tools constructs the pathing and java start line based on the SQLANY17 environment variable.

If the install has failed, rerunning the install in Repair mode, after addressing the cause of the failure, should be sufficient to address the startup problem with SQL Central, which was the result of the missing MSVC runtime.

@chris_keating, it should report an error before trying to install the program, not in the middle of the install. And what about the 2 JAVA issues reported?

The JAVA errors are most likely due to the missing MSVC as far as I can recall.
