No SID directory exists while running SUM

Good day friends

I have an issue trying to start SUM on my sandbox.

It is a Linux/DB2 system. EHP5 had been applied at the beginning of 2012 using EHPI.

Now I'm trying to upgrade the same system to EHP6 and I am getting the following error while starting the process.

I unpacked SUM v1 SP8.0

I start the server and it starts fine

I connect to the port and the GUI starts

I log into the GUI and it errors out:

No SID directory exists or the current user is not authorized to perform operations on SID directory.

You can find more information in the files /usr/sap/K22/put/SUM/sdt/log/SUM/DETERMINE-SID_01.LOG

The log is pretty short:

!--LOGHEADER[START]/-->

<!--HELP[Manual modification of the header may cause parsing problem!]/-->

<!--LOGGINGVERSION[2.0.7.1006]/-->

<!--NAME[/usr/sap/K22/put/SUM/sdt/log/SUM/DETERMINE-SID_01.LOG]/-->

<!--PATTERN[DETERMINE-SID_01.LOG]/-->

<!--FORMATTER[com.sap.tc.logging.TraceFormatter(%d [%6s]: %m)]/-->

<!--ENCODING[UTF8]/-->

<!--LOGHEADER[END]/-->

Jul 19, 2013 9:13:17 AM [Info  ]: Detected SID(s): K22.

Jul 19, 2013 9:13:17 AM [Error ]: The following problem has occurred during step execution: com.sap.sdt.j2ee.tools.sysinfo.sid.DetectSidException: No SID directory exists or the current user is not authorized to perform operations on SID directory.

We thought it may have been related to the previous version of SUM I was using but it does the same with the latest one.

Any ides would be greatly appreciated.

Juan

Good Day

Have a look at this SAP KBA:

1563660  - <sid>adm authorization issues during EhPI, Upgrade, SUM upgrade or SP import

Also check this SAP note:

Note 1401712 - JSPM/SAPJup/SAPehpi/SUM cannot detect all cluster instances

Additionally check the ulimts and the groups assigned to the sidadm user

Good Luck

Hello Juan,

If you have tried other possible things.

I would recommend to raise it  with SAP immediately.

we have encountered some other problems while SP STACK update through SUM.

there could be possibly a bug in tool itself.

Cheers

HI ,

Is this a DUAL STACK system ??

If not a dual stack and your have tried to remove the java stack manually , you may get these errors. Make sure you clean up your profile files and directories. There should be no visible J2ee key word any where.

Secondly ,if the directory sturcture of your SAP system is incorrect , the tool will not be able to find the correct SID. 3rd thing is you must start the SUM tool using the sidadm user.

br,

Varun.

Hi Varun

It is not a dual stack. ABAP only.

Never had a java instance.

The directory structure is standard and the tool works in other servers with identical strucuture.

SIDadm user has been used all along.

Thanks for your suggentions.

Hello Juan,

Could you please check one more thing here. What is the permission of the parent directories.

/usr/sap/K22.

So check the permission of the /usr , /usr/sap , /usr/sap/K22 ??? Who is the owner and whats the permission for the other users.

Regards,

Gaurav

Hi Juan

Better you can rename the SUM folder and then start the process from the beginning

Hi,

Can you please let me know which is the SID that you are using to run the upgrade tool.

You need to user SIDadm to run the SUM provess.

If you are running with SIDadm please upgrade the kernel of the source system to the latest kernel.

Please also check the below note.

1563660 - <sid>adm authorization issues during EhPI, Upgrade, SUM upgrade or SP import

Thanks

Hi,

Can you please check that you correct kernel.

SUM requires SAP kernel 7.20 or higher for target release

The Software Update Manager requires target release kernel 7.20 or higher for all platforms.

We recommend to always check before starting the update or upgrade whether there is a newer version of the SAP kernel available on SAP Service Marketplace and download it to the download directory.

Lower target release kernel versions are no no longer supported and may lead to an error during the update or upgrade.

Please try to stop the sap system and start it back. Please can you also post the ENV variable of this system.

dont forget to clean the ipc.

Thanks

Hi

The preliminary checks were done on the system and we have higher levels than required.

The kernel is 720 200

DB2 was upgraded to 9.7 FP6.

I tried to start the process in our dev machine and it satrted without complaint.

I am comparing the env values for the two <sid>adm users to see if there are any significant differences.

I will update the posting once done.

Hi,

I checked the ENV variables of the sidadm user where it does not work, against the variables of the sidadm user where it does, and there are no differences, excep for the SID.

Hi Juan,

You need to check environment variables with whom SUM tool is launched.

Are you running this with sidadm user?
