How to link portal and backend systems (http or https)

Hello,

I am wondering how you use http and https in your system environment.

Using https everywhere you have to buy a certificate for every system if I am not wrong.

Using https on the portal and http a message occurs saying that there are save and unsave data

Could someone tell me please how to handle this stuff that at least the employees don't have such things to take care about?

Where are you using http and where https?

Https is an additional security.

Hello and thanks for your answers,

@raghu: I am pretty clear about the fact that https is secured http.

I am searching for something like best practises for the connection between the portal and the backend system.

Also I am wondering about the message that there are secured and unsecured informations on the website because I thought that the portal exposes the websites from the backend system but is acting as something like the "onliest source" of the content. Therefore I assumed that it is easier to integrate the systems without having so much trouble with popup messages.

For sure I can configure my Internet Explorer to be quite by changing the zone (internet, intranet, ... ) I am in but this could not be the onliest way to handle the connections...

Any other hints / tips regarding this topic?

Hello,

the systems I want to connect to are normal r/3 systems. Some of them are in the DMZ and some of them are in the more secured area. In the secured area I would like to connect the systems with http because we don't like to buy certificates for all backend systems. Doing this the message about secured and unsecured data pops up. So the question with the unsecured connection between this system is if there is a possibility to configure both systems in a way that this message doesn't occur.

Connecting two systems with https everything works fine.

Hi Vanessa,

As far as connecting to the backend is concerned, most of the times the portal and r/3 server are in the same domain and it is advisable not to have any restrictions between them, sometimes not even a firewall. The end user will not be accessing the R/3 server directly but thru requests from the portal. so a http connection from the portal server to r3 will do.

You chould maintain security at a firewall/proxy/reverse proxy level, or provide secure connection to the end user thru VPN.

Most organizations restrict the acess to systems to the Local area network, or in extreme cases VPN.

using HTTPS in the LAN would be a Overkill

Sometimes an error popup appears when the http/https settings are not properly maintained. you chd contact your basis admin for this. HTTP should work just fine.
