I have worked with the BOBJ Team and Adobe Labs and the Adobe Labs team are working the issue. In the Interim, follow these steps:

Flash 10.1 does not support SWF Files in PowerPoint. So you need to downgrade your flash. Here is a step by step process to downgrade to a version of Flash that works with Xcelsius SWF files (10.0.45.2):

1. Check to see if you are running a version of Flash greater than 10.0.45.2:

a. http://flashbuilder.eu/flash-player-version.html

2. If you show a version greater than this, proceed to step 3, otherwise donu2019t do anything else:

a. 10.0.45.2

3. Uninstall your flash with the uninstall_flash_player.exe.

a. [Flash Player Uninstaller|http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/uninstall_flash_player.exe]

4. Install Flash Player 10.0.45.2 ActiveX and Flash Player 10.0.45.2 Plug-in:

a. [Flash Player 10 Archive - Use 10r45_2 from archive|http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/installers/archive/fp10_archive.zip]

And you are done. You can go to the above URL to check it is installed.

OK, now I am really confused. As per the previous comments posted on this thread, Adobe supposedly fixed the problem and we just had to wait until the new 10.2 came out. Now it seems that "the Adobe Labs team are working the issue......" !!! What is going on here? I was expecting any time now to receive the great news that 10.2 is out and thus our problems were over.....and now, Adobe is merely looking into the issue?

Can someone set the record straight? Please! This is becoming an atomic issue threatening to destroy contacts, images and business!

Hi,

The specific issue of embedding a (Flex) SWF into a PPT has been fixed by Adobe.

The fix will be included in the next quarterly release of Adobe Flash Player 10.1.x (see the comments from Adobe in the public bug): https://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-4843

We met similar problem with Xcelsius 2008 SP3 and Flash Player 10.1 regardless of Power Point.

One particular 1M size swf dashboard stopped working (loading blocked on "Initializing", hanging IE) after upgrading

FlashPlayer 10.0.45 to 10.1 .

Simpler dashboards keep on working, so it is hard to understand what is causing the complex dashboard not working after upgrade.

The only solution is rollback to FlashPlayer 10.0.

I've been reluctant to post this until now, but I have also seen FP 10.1 issues under IE7, IE8 and Firefox 3.6.x. I haven't had time to do careful testing, but did notice that in some cases an SWF generated on an Xcelsius workstation that had FP 9.x would seem to get stuck at initializing in the above browsers on workstations with FP 10.1 installed. Antonio's post encouraged me enough to mention it. I wonder if SAP is doing enough testing and QA?

Just verified my issue. SWFs generated on a machine with Flash Player 9.0.115.0 and viewed in any browser on a machine with FP 10.1.53.64 hang indefinitely during the initialization sequence.

Matt, the issue you linked specified PowerPoint. Does Adobe's fix extend to web browser plugin versions of the Flash Player as well? If not, this will be catastrophic for me, and even if Adobe has already corrected the issue it will still have a huge impact on my clients and on myself. Roeland Nieuwen wasn't really exaggerating.

Hi Forto

Please create a different thread if you have an issue not releated to FP10.1 and PPT otherwise it will get lost in this thread when it is closed (once the Adobe Flash Player updated comes out) and no longer set as sticky.

If you have paid support I would suggest you create a message for this...

Matt, when I created this thread it was not intended to be specific to PowerPoint.

But of course, you're the boss. I'll go create another thread.

Yes it's fixed, but according to the linked thread, the fix won't be available for use until Adobe's next scheduled quarterly release, whenever that is supposed to be (look for FP version 10.1.x).

Despite the fix, this bug will haunt us for the rest of our lives. Reason being that all your end-users have to be upgraded to this new 10.1.x branch before the bug vanishes. And before all users have upgraded... of course they are on 10.1 already, but that is due to a security fix that HAD to be patched. Almost all large enterprises have rolled out this new version. I doubt they will roll out another small fix soon.

Hence, as long as the Flash file generated by Xcelsius is not embeddable in the old sense, we can not expect uniform representation of our dashboards. So I have to keep packaging my PPT + SWF in the old manner if I wish to support all audiences.

What is awkward is that other SWF files can be embedded just fine. This makes me wonder if there are methods to avoid this bug as a whole in Xcelsius. If this were the case, we would no longer be affected by users not upgrading their Flash players. What is the stance of SAP on this?

Hi Roeland,

It may be that non Adobe Flex based SWFs will work, so things written purely in Flash.

You may have missed this in the thread but this issue affects any Adobe Flex SWF not just Xcelsius (and Xcelsius is written using Adobe Flex) and you cannot work around the issue.

I understand that and the bug is in Flash itself. But it still makes me wonder if Adobe is able to correct Flex to work around the bug in Flash. That would be the only way to deal with this issue properly and have it function as expected for 'legacy' clients. I highly doubt that they will however.

Shame that Adobe 'ruined' a great feature of this product. It certainly makes the previously easy deployment less attractive.

Hi,

Degradation of flash player is not required

Hope this will help you all

1. Copy the URL of the SWF file you want to insert and save it to a

notepad. For example, if the file name is abc.swf, and the file is

located at D:\My Documents, then the file URL should be "D:\My

Documents\abc.swf"

2. Insert the SWF file to your PowerPoint presentation. The

specific steps may be slightly different in PowerPoint 2003 and 2007.

  • In PowerPoint 2007, ensure the Developer tab has been

enabled. If it is not, go to Office (the Microsoft logo at the top left

of the window) -> PowerPoint Options, and tick the checkbox Show

Developer tab in the Ribbon in the pop up interface.

The next actions are the same in both versions.

  • Click on the More Controls icon in the Control group.

  • In the More Controls prompt box, scroll down the list to

Shockwave Flash Object and click the item. Then the ActiveX Control is

displayed as a crosshair object.

3. Enter the URL of the SWF file to the ActiveX Control item in

your presentation.

Right click on the crosshair item to select Properties from the

list. In the Properties interface, follow these steps:

  • Find out EmbedMovie and change the item property from

computer.

  • Go to the Movie item and paste the URL of the SWF file

(which is saved previously on your notepad) to the right blank.

4. Fine tune the SWF file in the PowerPoint presentation

To set specific options for playing the SWF file, do the

following in the Properties interface.

  • If the Playing property is set to True, you can turn it to

False to disable the Start/Pause control.

  • If you do not want the video to play in loop, go to change

the Loop property to False.

Close the Properties dialog box once it is done.

5. Set the presentation to the "Slideshow" mode to view the SWF

flash. Click the Slide Show button in the lower left of the PowerPoint

window (or press F5, or click View Show in the Slide Show menu,) to

run the SWF flash.

After that u must save your ppt ..

then click the office button i..e., on left top of your ppt

and then select the publish option to save your ppt..

After this you can open the saved ppt and you will find what u want to see..

NOTE:please check that the swf file is in same location as what u have given in your property of shockwave flash Object.

HAVE A GREAT PPT..

Hi Satish,

Indeed, this works. The problem that most people are having however, is that the embedding of the SWF is no longer possible. Before you just had to send over the .ppt, now you need to send the .swf along with the PPT and pray that the 'receiver' stores them both in the same folder.

Former Member

Hi Satish,

I kept FP 10.1 and I followed all of your steps, but still saw no results. However, I did get confused on the following step:

  • Find out EmbedMovie and change the item property from

computer.

Am I changing this from False to True? I changed it from False to True

  • Go to the Movie item and paste the URL of the SWF file

(which is saved previously on your notepad) to the right blank.

Should I put the URL in Movie or MovieData? I put the URL in the Movie section

Not sure why it didn't work?

sorry I am very new to the product, to your suggestion:

1.where can I get the URL of SWF? should I export it to PPT first or export it as HTML? and get the URL?

2. how to insert SWF into PPT?

the suggestion is too complicated, could you please send some screen shoot?

Many thanks

You export the SWF on its own first. Store it somewhere on your disk for example as "movie.swf"

Now export to PowerPoint. Save the PowerPoint in the same folder as the SWF.

Rightclick on the movie in PowerPoint and choose properties. Toggle Embedmovie to FALSE. Now in the movie field put the name of the .swf file, for example movie.swf.

One subsidiary problem which I and the clients are finding is that by going back to flash 10.0 you are not able to view websites and other applications requiring the latest flash player, that is, the one that does not work with Xcelsius! In my particular case, I have been forced to dedicate one computer with flash 10.0 and all the others with the updated flash version.

This is a really bad situation. At this point, I have the following questions:

1) Is Adobe prepared to fix the bug?

2) Or is SAP going to have to re write code to fix it?

3) In either case, how long can this take?

Can someone answer these questions? Thanks

N.B.

Xcelsius 4.5 does NOT have this problem. Most likely because it is not using Flex (or well, the predecessor).

Given that about a week has gone by since the issue was submitted to Adobe and there is no good workaround, can we please get a status update? How are SAP and Adobe prioritizing the fix? Is there a public link to the issue so people like me can track it directly in some fashion?

Thanks again.

Forto, I could not agree with you more.

Furthermore, I would like to insist for SAP-ADOBE to provide a direct ink to uninstall 10.1 and install 10.0 which we can pass on to our clients. Theoretically this is something simple; in practice it is far from it, as you need to mess with many options, etc.

I hope this is not too much to ask. Thanks.

One of our clients is having trouble using flashvars since the upgrade to 10.1:

"We just discovered that the newest version of Flash Player 10.1 is causing for us problems with the swf files that generated with Xcelsius.

We use Access forms with embedded ActiveX Shockwave Objects.

Via VB coding we set the link to the swf file - created with Xcelsius. The file opens fine, however the next step fails with Flash Player 10.1: to push data from Access to the swf file via flashvars."

Their users just get a white screen when trying to view swf files generated in this way. Has anyone else experienced problems with flashvars and Flash 10.1?

Rolling back to a previous version is also not a solution here as they are trying to export swf files to various external clients who would all also need ot be on the right Flash version.

thanks

Flash version 10.1 does not work with Xcelsius 2008. go to adobe.com, follow instructions to de-install version 10.1 and then search for archived versions and download version 10.0

We had a panic attack as all our executives upgraded to version 10.1 but found the solution online

Former Member

The situation previously described worked for one client. This work-around that requires ALL users (including executives) to "de-install" then install an archived version of Flash Player is not reasonable.

Agreed. When you have several hundred users spread across dozens of departments who have a wide range of technical skill and whose workstations are all under the control of other personnel, simply asking everyone to roll back FP 10.1 to 10 is not a good solution.

Darren & Larry, that is very disappointing news, and I'm sorry you guys are experiencing that! You can get older versions of the Flash Player here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html

Let me know if you have issues with the uninstall instructions on that page.

Does anyone know if Xcelsius 2008 Flash Player 10.1 support is in the works or not?

OK...so I uninstalled the flashplayer and then ran the adobe uninstaller. There was a link in one of the other forums to adobe flash plaey 10.0 and I got it installed. I have had to re-deploy the dashboards to ppt. The existing ones were hosed. This seems to have fixed the issue, however, I have other dashboards in PPT that I do not have the XLF files for and I can't get them to come back.

That's odd. Sounds like you might still have remnants of FP 10.1, or perhaps you have both 10 and 10.1 installed. Have you tried running the "hosed" PPT documents on a machine where Flash Player 10 was never upgraded to 10.1 in the first place? (Trying to isolate the problem.)

Has there been an official word on this issue with Flash 10.1? This essentially breaks all of the dashboards we have created over the years for our clients and is very bad for our business. I can't tell all of the historical users of our dashboards to downgrade to 10.0 - there are way too many individuals.

Of course I'm not from or affiliated with SAP, so take this with a grain of salt, but I believe Darren & Larry could still be isolated cases. I'd also like to see the secondary issue Larry reported (continued wonky Flash Player behavior even after rolling back to FP 10.1) isolated.

Has anyone else encountered problems? I planned to do some testing on my own as I have to roll out a product in a few weeks, but haven't gotten a chance yet.

Can someone from SAP please comment in this thread about whether or not Xcelcius 2008 SWFs are supported and working under Flash Player 10.1? Thanks!

Former Member

Hi everyone,

We can confirm that this is an issue, sorry for the delay in replying but we had to do some additional testing and found that this issue is not specific to an Xcelsius SWF embedded into a PPT but any Adobe Flex 2 SWF (which Xcelsius is based on) or Adobe Flex 3 SWF.

So the Xcelsius dev team is following up with Adobe to see what can be done to address this issue which seems to be a change in behavior in Flash Player 10.1.

For now if you want to embed a SWF into a PPT you may need to go back to an earlier version of the Flash Player than 10.1 (before you export to PPT).

We are also currently having this issue with Flash 10.1. Though you downgrade into old version of Flash still the problem is there. So what we are doing now while waiting for fix from Adobe/SAP regarding this is to export into flash and opening the dashboard (SWF file) through internet explorer. For the machines that has not been upgraded into new flash there is no problem. Sooner or later we will still need to upgrade into new flash version so a fix on this must be generated soon. If anybody got any fix please post it so we will be trying that and soon this issue will be closed.

(Emphasis above is mine)

I am confused. My understanding is, if we continue to generate projects while Flash Player 10.0 is installed everything should be fine for any users/customers running FP 10.0. It's only when SWFs are generated while FP 10.1 is installed, or when any SWFs are accessed by users who have FP 10.1 installed, that there is a problem.

Am I misunderstanding something here?

(Of course, even if this is all true, it's still an enormous problem since more and more of our users and customers are upgrading to FP 10.1 every day.)

Hi everyone,

The Xcelsius development team had already opened a bug with Adobe and are trying to follow up with them on this issue...

As of right now we are not sure what is causing this issue with SWFs embedded into a PPT and Flash Player 10.1, all we know (which I posted earlier) is that it affects any Adobe Flex 2 or Adobe Flex 3 SWF and not just Xcelsius SWFs.

As soon as I hear any more on this I will post the information on this thread...

Gunderic, in the root of the zip download ("fp10_archive.zip"), there is a text file ("readme.txt") that lists all the files in the download, broken down by Flash Player version and then by operating system. Hopefully it should be clear from consulting that list which installer is the right one for your situation.

Former Member

Thanks for the info, Matt. Is there a public link for the issue?

Former Member

Forto, thanks for responding so promptly. I did open the readme folder which lists a series of adobe 10 versions. None is listed as for VISTA (which is my OS). I started clicking and in all case took me back to the same page, like in a loop, after the files were extracted. It seems downloading a previous version is rather complicated. What to do? Is there any way that -while a solution is found- SAP and Adobe could provide a direct link to download the 10 version without the hassle and annoyance?

This is a real mega disaster, as it is wrecking havoc with all the clients! Definitely not good.

Uninstall new version: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

Install older version: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html

Our SWF files (larger than 1300 kb) hang during initialisation with flash player 10.1.x, where there were no troubles at all with 10.0.x

Former Member

Richard,

the problem with "installing the older version" is that it is very generic because you get a great number of options, none clear as to which is the one I need (OS Vista Business + Ultimate). I decided to click on

- 10.r12_36

- flashplayer10r12_36_win

- I then get s message that the application may depend on other compressed files, so I extract all.

- I then get the folder: fp10_archive. After clicking on it, among others I get 10r12_36 which I click on

- I get Flashplayer10r12_36_win and click on it and download it

I still have the same problem as before!

If SAP cannot provide pronto a link to download the Adobe10.0 directly without having to click on zillion folders (without result) maybe they can provide a hot line nr where we can direct our customers.... I hope they see the magnitude of the problem!! If not, the calls to the hot line will remind them

This 10.1 issue should be escalated as a high priority defect and resolved ASAP.

Does anyone know the current status? What's the likelihood of a new version of Flash Player being released in the very near future?

Is Adobe actively working to resolve this issue? Has SAP been able to pressure Adobe to find a resolution?

In most cases, PowerPoint is the primary deliver method for Xcelsius dashboards. Without this functionality, Xcelsius users are in a very difficult situation.

Please escalate. This is a high priority defect.

Matt, I realize SAP has reported the issue, but I am still fuzzy on exactly what was reported. I think it would be extremely helpful if you would describe the issue as it was reported in a bit more detail. Or even better, a link to the official bug report or issue.

Thanks for the help!

Richard, I tried and get the following message: "The version of Adobe Flash Player Active X that you are trying to install is not the most current version. Please visit the Adobe page to obtain the latest, most secure version" And when I clicked OK the installation stops! Sorry to bother you with so many questions, but what do you do in this case?.

I am really disappointed that SAP-Adobe have yet not provided a special internet link to install the previous Flash Player without the annoyance which we can use and send to our clients so they can view the Xcelsius created Power Point dashboards. Is it too much to ask while they find a permanent solution?

I got the same errormessage at first. After using the uninstaller of the page I posted earlier it did uninstall both the viewer as well as the activex component. Re-installing the old version after that worked for me.

Unfortunately I can't reproduce these steps again.. my home computer just crashed.. memory hardware failure

Former Member

Gunderic,

I just encountered some of the same problems you had. In my case, success came when I

1) used the adobe uninstaller that is listed previously

2) downloaded the entire Flash Player 10 archive

3) installed the flashplayer10r45_2_winax . This version seems to have the activex components necessary. And it did not give me the "hey you don't have the most updated version" message that I (and you) got previously.

I am running Windows Vista.

I am flabbergasted by this screw up. When I was looking at buying xcelsius, I had a feeling this would be a problem. I would have felt better if we were running on a platform like Silverlight, reducing fingerpointing from 3 to 2 (Microsoft excel>SAP>Adobe >Microsoft). I will be out of business unless a true fix is provided in the next month.

For professional security, I am going to start investigating other platforms.

Just a warning about Adobe Flash Player 10.1:

I recently updated my flash software in my PC and Noticed that I had issues with Xcelsius (SWF) files in PPT. For whatever reason, FP 10.1 causes issues with Swf files embedded in PPT.

Don't update to FP 10.1. If you have, you can get an unistaller here:

Get 10.0 here and re-install: Download Flash Player 10.0 http://centigonsolutions.com/templates/fp10/flashplayer10.zip

Larry, I followed your instructions. When installing I got two choices of ADOBE FLASH PLAYER 10.0 to install; I chose the second starting from the top. I then clicked on Power Point (2007) and tried to open one dashboard...same problem!!

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

I didn't encounter that. I just uninstalled adobe flash player and shockwave both via "add/remove programs". then I ran the cleanup routine I got from adobe's website. I then rebooted and then installed the 10,0 version I got from that link provided. It worked in solving my problem. I did have to reinstall shockwave later but it didn't seem to affect anything.

The issue is not isolated to PPT embedding of SWFs. 10.1 breaks all complex SWFs such that they are stuck in 'Initializing' phase. There was some mention on some blogs that this happens on complex SWFs of size 2MB+ but we are seeing this across SWFs that are about 1MB as well. The only solution is to revert back to 10.0.x

Hi everyone,

There is also a [KB 1486975|https://bosap-support.wdf.sap.corp/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/sno/ui/main.do?param=69765F6D6F64653D3030332669765F7361706E6F7465735F6E756D6265723D3134383639373526], you may need access to Service Marketplace to read it.

Dev is also looking into the other issue about SWF files over 2MB which seems to be new in Flash Player 10.1 as well...

To summarize the workaround solutions provided in the KB article provided by Matt, here are the possible workaround solutions:

1) Since SWFs can't be embedded into a .ppt file with Flash Player 10.1, one option is to have the SWF non-embedded. This will require you to export to flash (SWF) and insert the SWF file into PowerPoint manually. Instructions on how to do this can be found here. After inserting the flash animation as described in that link, ensure that the u201CEmbedMovieu201D property is false. The SWF file will remain separate from the PowerPoint file and both files must travel together.

2) Export to flash and open the SWF file directly in Internet Explorer (donu2019t use PowerPoint at all)

3) Downgrade to Flash 10.0 (uninstall flash player, then install flash 10.0) The archive for Flash 10 can be found [here|http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html].
