Transformation workks like a bridge between two objects, it can be compared with the infosource or update rules in the BW3.X.
You can create a transformation from the datasource to any infocube or a infoobject or an ODS. right click on the datassource & select create transformation from the context menu.
Data transfer process or DTP is like an info package in the earlier versions. A DTP is used to load data with in the BI system you use a DTP to load data through transfromation.
You create DTP for a Transformation
transformation is the one where you will map the fields between your data target and the corresponding data source. its just the equallent process like transfer structure and communication structure in 3.5.
data transfer process will just execute the data loading process. here we have to specify the type of extraction mode(delta or full)
