AFO BOBJ edition can connect with SAC from 2.5 onwards. See details below.
2460065 - Integration of SAP Analytics Cloud in Analysis Office - SAP ONE Support Launchpad
AFO for SAC edition does not include Powerpoint and word integration. It enables you to analyze and plan with data sources from SAP BW, SAP BW/4HANA, SAP HANA and SAP Analytics Cloud . SAC license should allow usage of AFO SAC edition only
Details for AFO SAC edition is here.

SAC Add-in is separate Add-in specifically built to consume SAC Models in Excel front end with support for specific formulas to read data like SAPGETDATA(), SAPGETDIMENSION() etc.
Also support for Data Action is available for planning models which AFO does not have. SAC Add-in is still very nascent and features get added with every QRC release. I feel its more suited for planning use case in SAC.

Couple of inputs needed, appreciate ur help
1) given the case above, in the existing setup of BOBJ AFO, if the plan is to get rid of BOBJ, can the existing AFO edition available with BOBJ will still be useful to connect to SAC models (live and import) or in this case we will have to go with SAP Analysis for Office SAC edition
2) currently in BOBJ AFO setup, there are alerts, whats the provision if using SAC with standard edition of AFO or using AFO SAC edition
3) Can grid pages cover all the functionality of afo for analytical purposes, no planning

My response below.
1. AFO BOBJ edition licensing is not free, so once you get rid of BOBJ completely you might have to think about the AFO Full edition as it cannot be licensed separately. AFO SAC edition should come with SAC licensing so I think You can switch to AFO SAC if the plan is to phase out BOBJ completely and no users using any other plugin of Analysis currently.
2. Not sure what you meant by alerts but SAC does have thresholds feature. Also AFO full edition and SAC edition differ on Powerpoint integration, BI platform services and BPC related plugins.
3. Do you mean grid pages of SAC story? I don't think grid pages can offer same analytical capabilities what AFO (any version) can offer.
