On October 20, 2025, SAP published the source code of the Sailing Analytics solution and its companion apps (Sailing Race Manager, Buoy Pinger, Sail Insight) on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license. This finally allows all interested parties to contribute to the solution, and optionally even host it themselves.
This was a logical next step for the project and remains in-line with SAP’s open source principles described in the SAP Open Source Manifesto. It lays out a vision where open source drives innovation through collaboration and empowers communities through openness.
What Sailing Analytics Does
The Sailing Analytics solution helps comment and analyze sailing regattas by combining data from satellite tracking, wind sensors, and decisions by the race committee into live results and analyses. As a cloud solution, it scales from small cost-efficient club-level events to the most visible regattas at the Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo (2020/2021) and Paris (2024), serving hundreds of thousands of concurrent viewers across several regions worldwide. It powers the world's largest sailing tracking database with wind data and proper score boards (https://sapsailing.com). While Sailing Analytics started in the domain of one-design dinghy sailing with a specific focus on Olympic classes, over time it has evolved into many other areas of the complex sport. This includes different handicap formats with support for handicap-based live rankings, and a variety of scoring systems.
The solution can be configured to work with different systems for position tracking, wind sensors, external regatta management tools, and official scoring systems. Through its RESTful API it is possible to integrate more external tools and components without a need to change the sources. For tighter integrations, such as tracking systems and administration interfaces, a connector architecture exists that allows developers to extend the solution accordingly.
Collaboration Models
With the code base now being released under a permissive open-source license, several new collaboration opportunities have opened.
In particular:
- Sensor technology providers can implement connectivity
- Federations, class associations and event hosts can work on new formats and scoring options to be supported
- Research institutions can extend the solution for their specific projects and in-depth analysis
- Sailing enthusiasts with a background in IT or graphic design can contribute to all layers and aspects of the solution
Find a Neutral Entity as the New Home
In the long run, we plan to move this project to a neutral entity, such as a foundation, to collaborate with more individuals and teams to ensure neutral governance. In a foundation, this solution will benefit from established processes for running open-source projects and structures for collaboration that allow interested stakeholders to easily shape the project’s future together.
