When organizations go through large-scale transformations, they often run many projects at once, each with its own goals, teams, and timelines. Keeping track of everything, understanding how these projects connect, and reporting on overall progress can quickly become a challenge.

That’s why SAP Cloud ALM now introduces a new capability called Programs, designed to make it easier to manage and oversee multiple related projects in one place.

What Is a Program?

Each Program represents a larger transformation initiative, and underneath it, you can have multiple projects that contribute to that initiative. Think of a Program as a big umbrella that brings together several related projects.

A Program gives you one central view to see how all your projects are doing, both individually and together. It helps you stay organized and aligned across teams and regions.

What Has Changed

Previously, when you launched Projects and Setup tile, you accessed everything under a single Projects tab.

Now, that tab has been renamed to “Projects/Programs.” This reflects the new capability we’ve added, the ability to manage not only individual projects but also Programs, which can bring together multiple related projects under one umbrella.

To access Programs, simply click the small dropdown menu next to “Projects/Programs” in the navigation area. From there, select Programs, and you’ll be able to view, create, and manage all your programs in one place.

Why Programs Are Useful

With the new Programs feature, you can:

  • Group related projects together under one Program.
  • Track overall progress across all projects in that Program.
  • See detailed project information when you need to dig deeper.
  • Run analytics and reports at the Program level to get a complete picture of how your transformation is progressing.

In short, Programs make it easier to see the “big picture” while still keeping control over the details.

How to Use Programs

Using Programs in SAP Cloud ALM is simple and intuitive:

  • Creating a Program
    • Users with Project Manage authorization can create a new Program.
    • Enter a Title (mandatory) and an optional Description.
    • After saving, the Program appears in the Programs list. Mustameer_Khan_1-1762359817359.png
  • Assigning Projects to a Program
    • When editing a project, you can now assign it to a Program.
    • The Program assignment is optional, each project can belong to zero or one Program.
    • You can also remove a project from a Program at any time.
    • The Program information is visible in both the Project and the Program levels. Mustameer_Khan_2-1762359854973.png
  • Viewing Projects in a Program
    • In the Program Details view, you’ll see a list of all projects assigned to that Program.
    • Projects are displayed with their names, statuses, and timelines(future roadmap), giving you a quick overview of how each project contributes to the overall initiative.
    • Archived projects that are part of the Program will appear as display-only items, they cannot be edited.
    • If a private project is part of the Program but you don’t have access rights to it, it will be shown as “Private Project”, keeping visibility balanced with access control.
  • API Support
    • You can also manage Programs using the public Projects API available on the SAP API Business Hub:
      • Create or edit Programs
      • Assign or remove a Program from a Project
      • Retrieve single or multiple Programs

What’s Coming Next

This is just the beginning. The Programs feature will continue to evolve as part of our roadmap.
In the future, we plan to enhance Programs with:

  • Improved analytics and reporting, so you can track progress more effectively.
  • Grouping of scopes to better organize work within programs.
  • The ability to manage requirements and risks directly at the Program level, and connect them with related projects.

These upcoming improvements will make Programs an even more powerful tool for managing complex transformations.

A Real-World Example

Let’s take a global SAP S/4HANA rollout as an example.

Imagine your company is rolling out S/4HANA across multiple countries Germany, the US, and Singapore, for instance. Each country has its own project to handle local configurations, integrations, and timelines.

By creating a Program for the entire global rollout, you can bring all these projects together under one structure.

  • Each project focuses on the specific work needed in its country.
  • The Program gives you one central place to monitor all of them helping you track overall progress, identify risks, and report on the global transformation effort.

With this approach, you get both clarity and control  you can see how each country is progressing, and at the same time, understand the overall health of your entire global S/4HANA transformation.

In Summary

The new Programs capability in SAP Cloud ALM helps you manage large-scale transformations more efficiently. By grouping related projects under one Program, you can gain better visibility, simplify reporting, and coordinate work across your organization.

And with planned enhancements for analytics, scope grouping, and risk and requirement management, Programs will soon become a key part of how you run your most important transformation initiatives.
