Recently I came across to a documentation from other BI vendor on how to create a Box Plot chart using their tools. Many steps taken just to create a Box Plot chart, so I'm curious how's the workflow for creating Box Plot chart using SAP Visual Intelligence.

So I will be using stock data from my property developer in Indonesia with stock ticker ASRI using the data sent monthly by my securities company.

As I am using stock data so please don't confuse between OHLC (Open High Low Closed) chart and Box Plot chart. Details explanation you could find on Wiki Page here

- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-high-low-close_chart (OHLC)

- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Box_plot (Box Plot)

Step 1 - Prepare MS Excel Data

- Using the data from 2007 to current 2012 (1202 records) this is what I've got in MS Excel format that will be used as my data source

Step 2 - Acquire MS Excel Data

- Open Visual Intelligence and choose MS Excel as my data source and browse to the Excel file I saved before and click on Acquire button

Step 3 - Enrich Semantic Elements

- After the data being Acquired there's 9 semantic elements detected and I just click Enrich All button

- After Enriching, SAP Visual Intelligence know my field that contain date and make Time hierarchy based on that field

Step 4 - Creating the Visualizations

- Click on the Visualize button and choose Box Plot chart

- Adding Open measures to Y Axis 1 and Time hierarchy to X Axis

- As above image shown there's no whisker for the Box Plot, it's easily set by choosing from Year to Quarter, Month or Day. As shown below using Month as selection

- By adding more measure such as Close, Low and High, I could achieve the following nice Box Plot chart for the Visualization

Conclusion

Using SAP Visual Intelligence the workflow is much less with just 4 steps from Raw Data to Great Visualizations
