Update: BiWhy is once again available for free to everyone at biwhy.net.

BiWhy was conceived as a comprehensive support tool for SAP BusinessObjects (BOBJ) to troubleshoot issues and facilitate administrative tasks. However, since about half of its functionality is not directly tied to BOBJ, it can also be used to troubleshoot and monitor other products. In that sense, BiWhy is evolving into a diagnostics platform, with the goal of including functionality most needed by support engineers and software administrators.

BiWhy was previously available exclusively through CoE Max Attention engagements.

What it is for

Analyze CMS DB

  • Understand system usage.
  • Identify what is driving growth, both by object count and by size.
  • See what is retained over time.
  • Analyze time trends.

Compare two snapshots to identify differences and common parts:

  • Between target and source systems to verify promotion.
  • Within the same system to see what has changed over time.

When to run it

  • Occasionally, to get a general impression of what is happening in the system and for housekeeping purposes.
  • Note: Before a migration or major promotion, it is a good idea to clean up the CMS DB to speed up promotion and reduce the number of failures.

Background

  • This functionality has already been used with more than 38 customers, in some cases repeatedly and across multiple systems.
  • The largest CMS DB processed contained 34 million objects.
  • CMS DB fetching is optimized through indexed fields, filters, self-tuning batch size, and incremental fetch options.
