Hello All,
I am currently trying to understand the features of Basic Warehouse Management (Embedded EWM Basic) and identify the features that will not be available when migrated from LE-WM to Basic Warehouse Management (Embedded EWM Basic) in S/4.
(a) Regarding grouping and releasing of the outbound delivery requests in Basic Warehouse Management (Embedded EWM Basic).
Warehouse Management System (LE-WM) has the capability to group together outbound deliveries or transfer requests according to certain selection criteria such as time. Wave pick is a special group type and all the grouped requests are processed together. Logistics handlers use RF guns to process the grouped requests in the wave one after the other.
Question 1: Does Basic Warehouse Management (Embedded EWM Basic) have the above capability to group outbound deliveries and release them together ?
If yes, then is the grouping capability same as the wave pick capability based on time constraint ?
I am not looking for any of the below advanced capabilities.
(a) use of wave template
(b) automatic creation of wave and release of the waves
(c) splitting or combining the outbound warehouse requests based on activity are, route, or product.
Question 2: Is Two-step pick functionality available in Basic Warehouse Management (Embedded EWM Basic) ? Step 1 corresponds to picking in a given zone. Step 2 corresponds to allocation of picked items to the individual requirements (orders).
Question 3: Is Interleaving available in Basic Warehouse Management (Embedded EWM Basic) ?
Question 4: My understanding is that interaction with external systems using Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is available irrespective of use of Embedded EWM Basic or Embedded EWM Advanced. Please confirm if my understanding is correct.
Question 5: Documentation (link) on features of Basic Warehouse Management (Embedded EWM Basic) Release 1909 is very limited. Given the limited documentation, it is difficult to interpret when a feature encroaches into the Embedded EWM Advanced functionality. Where can i read more about Basic Warehouse Management ?
Reference documentation for above questions.
Request clarification before answering.
Below are the responses i received from my SAP contact.
Question 1: Basic EWM has the ability to release outbound deliveries together – this would have to be driven manually and you would be limited to what you could do. They cannot be grouped together and we could not automate this process in basic EWM. In basic EWM you can still combine picking but for advanced waving features you will need Advanced EWM. I would suggest to use advanced EWM for this features rather than drive workarounds.
Question 2: Two step in picking is available in basic. Again, there would be some limitations here based on not using wave functionality. I would suggest to use Advanced EWM for two-step picking and having this driven by a wave.
Question 3: Interleaving is an advanced feature however there are some workarounds for basic EWM, for example, we can use queue management for a particular device/resource. The workarounds could be challenging to maintain, I would suggest to use advanced EWM and drive more efficient operations and stay away from long-term workarounds.
Question 4: Yes,
EDI is available with both basic and advanced. EDI is required when using a
non-SAP system. Most of the EDI
traditionally is carried out in ECC rather than in the warehousing component.
If you go decentralized, we suggest doing the EDI through S/4 HANA or ECC so
you don’t have multiple transaction points for the EDI.
