To help customers automate repetitive processes, SAP Logistics Management now introduces Automatic Picking Warehouse Task Creation.
By defining configurable schedule workloads, logistics clerks can automatically create picking warehouse tasks for eligible outbound warehouse requests, reducing manual effort while ensuring warehouse operations remain transparent and under control.
From Manual Processing to Automated Warehouse Execution
Every outbound warehouse request represents work that eventually needs to be picked. Before warehouse operatives can begin, picking warehouse tasks must be created.
Automatic Picking Warehouse Task Creation eliminates this repetitive step. Instead of manually triggering task creation, the system continuously evaluates outbound warehouse requests based on configurable workloads and automatically creates picking warehouse tasks whenever the defined conditions are met.
As a result, warehouse picking can start sooner, while logistics clerks can focus on handling exceptions instead of routine operational work.
Schedule Flexible Workload
At the center of this capability is the new Schedule Workload Creation application, where logistics clerks can configure and manage automation schedules for each warehouse.
Using this application, clerks can:
- Enable workload automation for individual warehouses
- Define one-time or recurring execution schedules
- Configure business-specific selection criteria
- Maintain multiple schedules to support different operational scenarios
Automation rules can be tailored using business attributes such as:
- Planned Goods Issue (GI) date
- Ship-to party
- Carrier
- Request creation date
- Staging bin
This flexibility allows clerks to automate picking based on their own operational priorities without changing warehouse processes.
Automatic Picking Warehouse Task Creation
Once an automation schedule is active, the system periodically evaluates outbound warehouse requests based on the configured selection criteria.
For every eligible request, SAP Logistics Management automatically creates the corresponding picking warehouse tasks. Once created, these tasks become immediately available in the Process Warehouse Tasks application, where logistics clerks can review, organize, and continue managing warehouse execution. Also they are immediately available in the SAP Warehouse Logistics mobile app where warehouser operatives can start execution.
This seamless transition from automated task creation to warehouse execution helps reduce manual effort while ensuring picking activities can begin without unnecessary delays.
Transparent Monitoring and Execution Tracking
Automation should simplify warehouse operations—not create a "black box."
For this reason, every automation execution is recorded in Monitor Job Schedules, giving logistics clerks full visibility into the automation process.
Execution logs include information such as:
- The automation schedule that was executed
- Trigger type
- Processing results
- Error details for failed items
With built-in monitoring, warehouse teams can quickly review execution results, investigate issues, and verify that outbound requests have been processed successfully—all without requiring technical expertise.
Outlook: Building the Foundation for Smarter Warehouse Automation
Automatic Picking Warehouse Task Creation is an important step toward more automation in SAP Logistics Management.
Looking ahead, we could expand this automation framework to support additional warehouse workloads and further streamline warehouse execution through capabilities such as task bundling and work distribution. In addition, we are planning to work on more stock removal strategies (currently supported: FIFO and fixed bin) in order to allocate the best matching stock.
Beyond warehouse execution, we also see opportunities to expand this automation approach to other logistics processes, supporting a more connected and automated logistics landscape across SAP Logistics Management.
