Syntax issues for Object Dependency

I am trying to pull the value from characteristic A into characteristic B IF characteristic B is populated. I thought it would be as simple as $self.B= $self.A if $self.A = '*' but I must be making a mistake somewhere. Any help? Points to be awarded at resoltuon.
