Hi,
I am new to PM. When i read in the forum, i came to know that function location can be "Building". When I am creating function location in SAP, after entering the name of the function location and structure indicator. In general tab, there are fields like weight, inventory no. acuation date, .. and in other tabs asset, cost center and so on. If function location is a building then why these fileds are there? I feel apart from assigning buildings, we can assign equipment and so on.
Pls clear whether i came correct or not. Also, when i press F1 help on each field, im not getting any data. If possible, explain details for each field.
Thanks
Pook
Request clarification before answering.
In case of Functional Location (e.g., Buildings), some of the fields may not require to be entered.
SAP has given common fields which can be used for any category. Also these fields are common across Technical Objects (i.e., Equipment & Functional Location).
In case of Buildings as Functional Location, following may suit here.
Acquisition date - The date you purchased that Building
Inventory Number - If you want to capture any other details like Internal Number or any Company specific details (apart from Sort field, Asset number & Technical Identification Number), you can use that field. For example, if you have more number of buildings & you want to capture some of the details, you can use that field as that field data is free text.
Weight - This may not applicable for Building Functional Location.
Based on your Functional Location category, you can hide or show or make mandatory of the standard fields available in those screens.
You can create many Functional Location category.
IMG - PM & CS - Management of Technical Objects - Technical Objects - Functional Location - Define category of Functional Location
You can do Field visibility details in following menu.
IMG - PM & CS - Management of Technical Objects - Technical Objects - Functional Location - Define Field Selections for Functional Location - Field Selection for Functional Location (Common Fields for Equip./FL)
Here, click Influencing button in the top. In next screen, you can Functional Location category (ITOB-FLTYP). Double click on that, then in the next screen, give your Functional Location category. There, you can define each field condition. Based on that definition, Functional Location master screen will appear.

Thank, you, Maheswaran, for this excellent post!
I have just a minor addition which Pook might find useful:
Where the Functional Location Category is defined, a View Profile may be assigned. This is defined in SPRO > Plant Maintenance > Master Data > Technical Objects > General Data > Set View Profiles for Technical Objects
There you can define a view for Functional Locations with Screen Group H3 "Screen group functional location", and this allows you to control which tabs and screen areas are displayed for a Functional Location (e.g. if you needn't display General, Manufacturer, Equipment data etc.)
Functional Location can be Plant Area. Functional Location Hierarchy would be--
Company - Plant - Plant Section - Production Area (Based on Production Stage. Each stage area can be defined as Functional Location) - Equipment - Components
First Level is Company
Second Level is Company - Plant
Second level can be assigned first level. So that, you can get the complete hierarchy of your from Company to Equipment (Even with Components by means of Bill of Material for Equipment & Functional Location).
Check the below links (You can also search in SAP Help).

Hi,
Acquisition value and acquisition date are significant for comparison
If Maintenance cost of Functional location exceeds than then acquisition value, then, management decides whether they can scrap functional location or they can continue
Inventory number is used in Asset accounting
I am not sure on the functionality of Weight, size and dimension fields

santosh
