It essentially means master data cleansing such as removal of redundant material master / customer master / vendor master data, updating and correcting excise master data etc. This is necessary because, despite controls, over a period of time we tend to accumulate lot of muck which needs to be cleared for smooth functioning and optimum system utilization.
This can happen in an already functioning SAP environment or during migration from legacy systems to SAP.
