Regarding LSMW Principles

It is being said that in LSMW Most of the functions should reside in R/3. No collection of individual programs on different platforms. What does this mean. Different platform means..??

LSMW Is no longer supported by SAP, as far as I know, there are other tools.

Different platforms means some programs for CRM maybe, that use different technology.

where did you hear such ?

LSMW just became added to standard SAP Netweaver with ECC6, while you had to get it by a free download in earlier releases.

There are many ways to manage the transfer of data from legacy systems into SAP databases. There can be third party software offerings, each of which could run on any number of platforms. There can be script-based programs executed on at the OS level, there can DBM tools that modify the databases upon which SAP rests, there can be PC based solutions that work through the GUI, etc etc. My poor powers of deduction lead me to believe that the author is saying that SAP wanted the focus of LSMW to be within R/3, and to minimize or eliminate the other possible platforms being used.
