Hi Experts

In SAP, when trying to modify a System Object, it asks for Access Key... What is this exactly?

Is it different from Developer Key?

Thx

Santo

Hi ,

Access key - If you need to change any SAP standard object you will need the access key. This will happen only after exhausting all the availabe solutions and it becomes imperative for you to change the standard object. This is provided by SAP. There can be any no. of access keys requested for one developer

in one project...

Developer Key - Is a one time activation key for you to start working on the SAP custom developements like programs, creating tables, etc... This is unique for one developer for one installation. This is requested by the basis in service.sap.com. You can find the installation no. in system-->status.

Hi,

If you want to modify any standard object, you require an access key. Contact your BASIS, he will be getting you the access key from SAP service place.

Thanks & Regards,

SAP doesnt allow developer to directly modify a Standard object, we require an access key for that. We need to take lot of care while changing an SAP Standard object.

Where to get that key for changing the Std Object?

Is it to be got from SAP or the Local Basis Admin?

Then.. what is the role of Developer Key?

It is from local BASIS admin, he will be getting it from SAP Service marketplace website.

what is the use/role of Developer Key?

When it is asked for? How many times, it will be required for a user?

Using developer key consultants can make changes to custom developments. If a functional consultant tries to change a custom object using his logon id, it will ask for the developer id.

Hi

In a server, when u try to create a program from SE38 for the first time.. It will ask for a developer access key, That means every developer has to be registered in service.sap.com, otherwise you can start working on the server.

Vishwa.

This ID is asked for only once when I created a Z Report only.

Is it required with SE38 only or not?

For other objects like function modules or tables, it was not required.

Why?

The developer key is a combination of you installation number, your license key (that you get from http://service.sap.com/licensekey) and the user name. You need this for each person that will make changes (Dictionary or programs) in the system.

Santo,

Yes. Both are same.... and Actually an ABAPer has nothing to do with access key, In a company BASIS guys provide the access keys..only they have authorization to do that...

>I think both acces key and developer key are same.

The above statement is wrong. they are different and their function is different.

Hi Madan...

Cool reply... I have 2 more quests..

1) Cant the local Basis Admin provide the Access key? Is it only the SAP provides Access key?

Or.. both Dev and Acc keys are generated by Basis Admin from SAP Service(Market) Place?

2) Will the Developer key be used only once per installation? (i.e., if system asks for Dev Key when user tried to create his first Report, wont it be asked again if he tries to create his first Table in that system?)

Plz reply...

Hi,

It may so happen that, you have to justify the reason for requesting the access key. Once you make the changes to SAP std. objects using the access key, SAP will stop providing future support to the changes.. This key has to come from SAP thru you basis. And remember you will have to justify the reason for changing the std. object of SAP..

Yes. The developer key will be used only once. It can be any 1st object. Maybe a table, program..anything that requires a Transport request to be created. You do can view SAP standard objects before activating the developer key, but you cannot create any thing... This is like activating you mobile SIM card for the first time...
