Modification ?

What is actually meant by a MODIFICATION in SAP Terms.

If the standard functionality in SAP doesnt offer something required at the customers end , Does the modification come in picture then ? Who does the modification SAP or the Customer ?

Modification generally refer to a change that is done to a standard sap program when it fails to meet some user requirement.

When we do a modififcation, we actually change the standard code of the program. The changes will be overwritten when the user goes for an upgrade or when he applies a service pack.

SAP provides an access key for modification and the customer does it.
