changing domain in table vbap

Dear all,

          I have one requirement to change the domain of standard table.

suppose ,  we have one standard domain with  values:

data type - DEC.

No. Characters        5

Decimal Places        0

Output Length         6

but, as per my requirement i want to make it.

data type - DEC.

No. Characters        7

Decimal Places        2

Output Length         9.

how to do that ?

I can give you 61 pages of reasons that yo don't want to do that.  Doing a where used on VBAP I get 61 pages of objects returned!  Each and every one of these would potentially have to be changed as well.

The smarter route is to add a additional field that gets filled in at the same time as the original one.

But perhaps we are jumping the gun.  Why don't you tell us more about the real problem that you are trying to solve.  Perhaps we can propose some alternatives.

Don't execute the Where-used on VBAP but first on data element, and then on every structure, table, internal table, etc. which use the data-element you want to change, and good luck for the implicit and explicit move-corresponding statements...

Santosh,

It is not advisable to change the domain in a standard table. VBAP is a table used in many programs/objects.

If you change the domain, it will affect all these programs/objects.

A lot of them might give a dump as well which will impact business.

Hi,

It’s not advisable to change the standard domain as SAP uses standard domain in lot many tables and finally get referred into the programs.

Changing domain directly can cause short dump in programs.

So if you have a requirement in your custom report or z table then creates a new one and uses the same.

          but as per the requirement. in vbap-UMVKN. this field has

data type - dec.

no of character - 5

decimal places - 0

output length - 6

for example - as per the user requirement. in one of the screen i/p for conversion  here , he wants to enter 1290.80 kg = 900 birds.

since, the field vbap-UMVKN will not allowing the value '1290.80' to be entered here.

so, as per the requirement user want to make it.

data type - dec

no of character - 7

decimal places -2

output length - 9

is there any solution to do  this ?

Hi Santosh,

Please find the below screen shot, it is not advisable to change this field.

124 tables and 1406 structures.

option: create the customized field with append structure in VBAP. Add the screen field in sales transaction. finally educate the users to usage of the new field.

This is the simplest way!

As everyone said, you better create a custom tab with z field and do whatever you want.

It is not at all advisable to change the standard domain, because it is being used in many table.

Hi,

I understand the concern around changing the domain of a standard field in VBAP.

But what if I want to change the increase the length of a custom field in VBAP say from DEC 9, 5 to DEC 14, 9.

I tried this on a custom table in DEV and as expected the data is not lost and the existing values are converted to DEC 14, 9

In PROD, we have millions of records. Does anyone have experience moving such a change to PROD or comment on this approach.

If you increase the length of the field, the data may be kept, but have you thought about all the reports (including standard SAP reports) that expect a data element of a certain length?

Yes Rob, I have already looked at the dependencies. My concern was around time for the conversion as we have a lot of data in VBAP ( ~ 200 M ).

Any idea how long it would take?

Also, you mentioned, "The data may be kept".. That's little scary.. Any reason you think this wouldn't work as expected in PRODUCTION. Please advise.

I didn't mean that the data may or may not be kept; I just meant that there are other considerations besides keeping the data.

The time for the conversion is not something that can be answered here; it depends on your system and it's configuration. Besides, it's a Basis issue, not ABAP.
