As an IT professional I would like to experiment with SAP so that I can try out ideas and learn more about it. I have found that many vendors such as IBM and Oracle offer developer editions of their products for these purposes. Ideally I would like to run an SAP instance on my personal workstation to use as a sandbox for programming and evaluation. Does SAP offer a such a developer edition?

Yes, there are sneak preview editions available. Here is the link. If you want to practice ABAP development, then you want the download in the last column, the others are the java stack sneak previews.

Ah...... not for download from here. You can order from the SAP shop.
Go to http://www.sap.com/company/shop/index.epx
Click Knowledge Shop
In the search box, type "50077574".
The result will show, add this to shopping cart and checkout.
It will arrive in a couple of weeks.
