Hi Eva

Giving a try,see below

1) What is the differece between BI and MDM?

BI is one of the OLAp tools used more for reporting purposes and analysis. can be used for both master data reporting or transactional data. Example can be sales reporting based on multiple dimensions like Geography, time or a combination. MDM whereas is used for managing master data types in an organization across hetrogeneous platforms and basically meant for consolidation, data quality, harmonization etc. MDM is also used for distributing the de duplicated and enriched data. the list is endless actually.

2) What is the need for SAP to start a new module called MDM?

Many. Listing one of them

In any global companies we can multiple legacy systems or ERP systems on which day tp day transactions are happening and which store master data. Ther are high chances for duplicates to exist and MDM takes acre of this.

3) what did the companies use before MDM was launched by SAP?

SAP MDM is atool used for master data management(MDM). We have other tools like IBM WS, Data WH. You can rwad this article for more details:

Hi Eva,

What is the differece between BI and MDM?

The differences between BI and MDM are as follows:

1) MDM works on a database as a data model/structure of data. MDM has it's own import/data enrichment/syndication clients. However it itself can not generate a report. Where as BI working on a data base can generate report.

2) The technical difference would be MDM has different installable and different GUI clients for each activity.

What is the need for SAP to start a new module called MDM?

In any enterprise, master data is the most precious thing. When an org is running with many applications and the source of data creation can be as many, it's imperative to have a single truth of any data. This can be achieved by MDM. Also MDM can be used as the source of data creation and the other systems can be receiving data from MDM.

what did the companies use before MDM was launched by SAP?

MDM is a concept which exists for quite a long time . SAP MDM is only a tool to manage it.Before to SAP MDM, there are many other MDM tools available and all have different capability. But an org with already R/3 or ECC as the ERP will have an easier integration with SAP MDM.

There could be many more blogs/Material which you can browse to get more info on this.
