Why has cut-and-paste behaviour changed? [Rant]

So we know cutting-and-pasting can be a bit of a nightmare in Workzone because by default ctrl-v pastes in any formatting from the source material. This means that unless your editors are well drilled you get inconsistent formatting across your pages that need reformatting.

But I'm sure many of us knew that ctrl-shift-v pastes without source formatting, so this is a simple workaround that's as easy to use as ctrl-v.

But NOW, following this week's (again unnannouced) release we're seeing a new paste behaviour: When pasting formatted text we're invited to choose from

  1. keep source formatting
  2. clear formatting
  3. match destination formatting

So as a user I now have to select one of these options (none of which dismissed the modal), and if I select 1 or 2 (or just ctrl-shift-v), the content is placed on a new line.

I've counted the interactions. What was previously 1 interaction (ctrl-shift-v) is now somewhere between 3 and 10 interactions depending on your choices and how hard it is to re-combine your sentence. Plus you HAVE to move your hand from keyboard to mouse because you can't dismiss the modal with escape, adding friction to the whole experience

Well done SAP for breaking something as foundational as cutting and pasting. <slow clap>
