Which SQL License for SAP systems?

Dear experts,

my client is checking the licenses and asked me which license type shall / must be used for SAP systems (currently ECC 6.0).

For production system we are sure that we need SQL Enterprise License, but how about test and development system? Is a Standard SQL license enough for those systems, or must we also take Enterprise license.

According to SAP note 1491158 - Information About the Microsoft SQL Server License Scope:

Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise Edition is required for all SAP Business Suite / SAP NetWeaver applications. 
Other SQL Server editions are currently not supported.

All important features that are required for the usage of SAP Business Suite / SAP NetWeaver are already contained in the Enterprise Edition of SQL Server.
You do not need to purchase any components separately.

SAP NetWeaver systems (SAP ERP/SAP ECC are based on SAP NetWeaver) can run with Microsoft SQL Server (Enterprise Edition) database and support two kind of SW/licenses for the installation of the database with the SAP NW system:

- a MS SQL Server SW license purchased directly through Microsoft or through other third parties like Microsoft Value-Added Resellers (VARs); the customers should contact their Microsoft contact/Microsoft re-seller for more information about this license

- a SAP and MS SQL Server SW license purchased through SAP (also named SAP 'runtime' license).
Each customer who already owns a SAP product license (which means purchased through SAP) has a SAP Accountant Executive or SAP-reseller contact person. The customers who need to have more information about their existing, or about a new, SAP NW/MSSQL Server database licence, should contact their SAP Accountant Executive or SAP-reseller contact person.

For those customers who do not own a SAP product, they should contact the SAP subsidiary located in their countries.

In regards to the Microsoft SQL Server 'edition' supported by SAP NetWeaver systems, SAP only supports the 'Enterprise Edition'. This statement is indicated in the SAP NetWeaver/Microsoft SQL Server Installation guide, as well as in SAP note 62988.
