Webi Query filter vs Bex filter - performance

Hi all,

we are using web intelligence 4.1 at top of SAP BW using BICS. Is there any difference in performance when we use filter in Bex Query or when we filter data in web intelligence query panel (query filters)? What do you recommend? When to use filters in Bex query and when in Webi? For example when you filter the year 2011 in web intelligence query panel, the BEx Query will return only data from 2011 or return all data and Webi will filter the display?

They are bpoth the same, it's more about what you want the Query to do.

If you ALWAYS want to use the filter, build it into the Bex Query

If you don't ALWAYS want to use the filter, build it in at the Webi query level.

Hi Martin,

If you want to use the Bex query for multiple Webi reports with different filters keep filters at Webi level before running the report which will filter  the data same as Bex level. If you keep filter after the webi report ran, it will effect performance which ran all the data and then you are filtering it.

Hi Martin ,

I didn't feel any difference in having prompts at BEx or at webi level.

For static filters it is always recommended to have at webi level.Because you can reuse the BEx query for different reports.

Both features will lead to same content of filter sent to BW, and consequently processing in BW server and data sent back will be identical.

Choosing Variable or Query Prompt will eventually depend on functional concerns. For instance if BEx Query designer wants to force filter for all BI tools reporting on a certain Query, then you go with BEx Variable. On the other hand if you want some WebIntelligence documents to have mandatory prompts and in other documents they can be optional, then it's more flexible to use a single Query and create WebI Query Prompts.
