Hello everyone,

We are planning an on-premises SAP HANA deployment and are evaluating KVM-based virtualization platforms for the host. The guest operating system will be SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications, running the SAP HANA database.

We are considering the following hypervisors:

  1. Ubuntu Server with KVM/QEMU
  2. Rocky Linux with KVM/QEMU
  3. Red Hat Enterprise Linux with KVM
  4. Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization
  5. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server with KVM (including SUSE Harvester)
  6. Proxmox Virtual Environment

My questions:

  1. Which of these platforms are officially certified and supported by SAP for production SAP HANA deployments? Since they are all KVM-based, does SAP support depend on the specific hypervisor distribution and vendor, or on KVM itself?
  2. Can SAP HANA run on a SLES for SAP guest hosted on Ubuntu KVM or Rocky Linux KVM and still be fully supported by SAP for production use?

    Thank you

Virtualized instances of SAP HANA are only supported on VMware vSphere ESXi, Nutanix AHV, Red Hat Virtualization KVM and SUSE Linux Enterprise hypervisors. More info:
