SAP - Private cloud Migration/deployment options

Hi Experts,

What are all the possible deployment options for migrating from an on-premise( NW and S/4HANA) to the private clouds like AWS, Azure, and GCP?

Instead of traditional backup/restore, Migration cockpit and DMO system move to cloud.

I will appreciate your valuable inputs and mention for each of these clouds separately.

Please don't paste the link from respective cloud provider docs and kindly summarize the possible realistic migration options from your experience and overview it.

1. Is Lift and shift to a cloud called backup/restore? This is one of the option to migrate. Typically List & Shift does not involve change in OS/DB/App version. so Backup/Restore will be opted for any non-HANA systems. Target need not be cloud & can be any private DC, Public/private cloud etc.,

2. Is Lift and Migrate to cloud called as Export/Import to HANA platform? - This is one of the available options to migrate which migrate the data in OS dependent format

3. Apart from these SAP classical methods, are there any other options provided from cloud providers in order to speed up the on-premises copy/migration? Always follow SAP supported options though hardware specific storage level replication/copy possible. but not certified by SAP.

Migration Approach/concept will remain same irrespective of Public cloud partners like AWS, Azure, and GCP or Private cloud.

Typically following option exists

1. Backup & restore :- Quick method to migrate if it is Homogenous migration. takes longer time then other options depending on the size, network etc.,

2. Exp/imp - applies in case of Heterogenous migration

Parallel - Migration can be executed in parallel, if you have good network bandwidth else plan to test in POC and then decide the feasible option though parallel is supported with associated risks

3. DMO in case migrating to HANA

Always refer SAP standard guides for migration

Regarding other query on Migration cockpit, it has nothing to do with system migration & this is applicable for Master /transactional data migration in greenfield scenarios.

Please clarify the below terms. Are these common to all mentioned cloud platforms?

Lift and shift to cloud

Lift and Migrate to cloud

Lift and Shift/Migrate to Cloud, Migrate part to HANA

* Is Lift and shift to a cloud called backup/restore?

* Is Lift and Migrate to cloud called as Export/Import to HANA platform?
