SAP on AMD

Plz Pardon for my ignorance.I am planning to buy AMD 4200+ PC and Windows XP,SAP Software on it.But many people in my place are discouraging me telling that SAP doesnt run install/run properly on AMD 4200+(Dual Core,64 bit) platform.Though i know that it doesnt depent upon AMD/Intel i just wanted to make sure whether "SAP Runs/Install correctly on AMD " systems.

If you want to install a SAP system on Windows you should visit <a href="http://www.saponwin.com">www.saponwin.com</a>. This Web page lists all servers which have a hardware certification for SAP systems on Microsoft platforms.

"The hardware certification process has been established by closely communicating with SAP. All hardware vendors need to certify their hardware platforms for usage of SAP Solutions on MS Windows in order to ensure their customers always receive high quality hardware that is additionally tested by an independent assessor. Note that SAP supports the operation of certified SAP systems, only."

To my knowledge several server configurations from different vendors running AMD Opteron processors are certified.

Hi Bhaskar,

FYI, we are using AMD Opteron CPUs for most of our SAP Platforms. The performance benchmarks are much more impressive than Intel and also half of the price of Intel.

Ans is Yes. It is X64 Architecture based processor. Other technical name for this architecture is X86_64, AMD64, X64. Good thing is it is X86 compatible. Which means you can even install 32bit based OS installation.

AMD is making mark in the technology front, and many OS vendors are supporting it. Based on it's architectural facts, for some case it is superior. It should good for the Server kind of applications like SAP.

You have following combinations possible, if you are going to use AMD X64 based system.

Windows Server ( 32 bit or 64 bit) - ( MaxDB, MSSql, Oracle, DB2 ) - SAP

Linux (32 bit or 64 bit ) - ( MaxDB, Oracle, DB2 ) - SAP

Solaris ( 64 bit ) - ( MaxDB, DB2 ) - SAP

You can try any of the above combination in your platform. Bios also sometime influence on this. i am assuming you have all the option to perform the necessary task.

When we talk about XP .? it is not suported by SAP.

but sometime back i installed SAP 4.7/Oracle on XP without any problem.

i think you should be able to install the Netweaver suff also, unless SAP enforced any OS version check in the SAPinst tool.

MSSql Server version will not get installed in XP, it says you need server version of OS. but you can install the evaluation version of MSSQL server in XP which will be typically valid for 6 months.(In case if you want to try)

MaxDB and DB2 should be possible, but i have not tried those options.

When we talk about thermal factor, all the processor are good when your heat sync and cooling system design is good, if it is not good even intel or any processor will become very hot and system will turn-off. with respect to this if any of your friends have similar system check with them. I don;t have such problem in my system.

If it is laptop you may have to think about it because you are going to keep that on your lap. when you are considering for a desktop it should not make much difference.

My personal experience, use Server class OS to get the best possible performance.

XP does not support SAP.Go with win2k3

disadvantage with AMD processor is cannot run continouslly as its get heated very quickly, since it is u r personal installation,i think u can try.

well, let me put it that way: it will install but i'm not sure whether sap will support windows server operating systems on it; for linux have a look at sapnote 816.097...by the way: xp could be problem, if it's supported after all, use win2k or win2k3 as the operating system...
