Hi,
Our Netweaver 7.5 application servers ABAP/JAVA are runing on Redhat 6. The Redhat version is going out of maintenance so we have to upgrade the OS to Redhat 8. However, we also have to move our application servers to another network domain.
We have to move about 40 Linux application servers to this new domain.
For the production environment, I am looking for a fast way to move the application servers to the new Linux system. Deinstalling and installing again will take a long downtime.
With the database copy tool in SWPM, I’m able to refresh the database to another instance. I followed that procedure before.
For the situation descried above I do not have to move the database but the application servers it self’s. With the SUM-DMO option, it is possible to move the existing environment to a new database. However, that is not my case.
My though is to install a new instance with the same SID on the new (Redhat 😎 application server with a temporarily new HANA database. After that, I could do a redirect back to the existing HANA database from the old application server.
But when I install a new Netweaver 7.5 instance with the same SID on the new application server I get an error that the ASCS with the SID and instance number already is installed on the old application server. Even when I completely shut down the old application server.
The error I got is the following:
You entered instance number 01 on host ruz3 for ASCS instance.
DETAILS: In SAP system RUZ, ASCS instance already exists with instance number 01 on host ruz1. However, only one instance of type ASCS is allowed for the same SAP system ID (SAPSID).
SOLUTION: Change the SAPSID. Alternatively, uninstall the existing instance and restart the installation from scratch. You can also reuse the number of the existing instance - if the installation is running on host sap-dev-ruz1, enter 01 as an instance number; if not, abort the current installation and start it on host sap-dev-ruz1. CAUTION: The existing instance is overwritten if you reuse its instance number.
The application server ruz1 is the old server and the ruz3 the new one
The SAP documentation I have found it is written that the old application server has to be deinstalled first before the new application instance could be installed.
Has someone some experience or ideas how to move the application servers without deinstalling the old application servers first and installing the complete instances?
All information is welcome.
Kind regards,
Richard Meijn

Hi Richard,
not sure if I fully got your situation, but you may check the "ASCS instance move" of SUM. It applies not only to migration cases (DMO) but also for updates/upgrades (keeping the existing database). So if you find at least one software component to update, this scenario may apply to your situation.
See https://blogs.sap.com/2019/04/12/ascs-instance-move-use-sum-to-switch-your-ascs/
Kind Regards, Boris
