Hello SAP Community,
I am currently operating a SAP PowerDesigner 16.6 SP03 server repository hosted on Microsoft SQL Server 2016.
According to the PowerDesigner 16.6 SP03 Installation Guide, SQL Server 2016 is the latest explicitly listed compatible SQL Server version.
As SQL Server 2016 has reached the end of its extended support, i need to address the obsolescence of the repository database platform. At this stage, i am not able to migrate to PowerDesigner 16.7. Therefore, the PowerDesigner version must remain 16.6 SP03.
Can someone please confirm the highest / most recent Microsoft SQL Server version supported for hosting a PowerDesigner 16.6 SP03 repository? In particular, can someone clarify whether SQL Server 2017, SQL Server 2019, or SQL Server 2022 is supported with PowerDesigner 16.6 SP03.
Thank you in advance!
Best regards
To resume:
1. SAP PowerDesigner version: 16.6 SP03.
2. PowerDesigner srepository hosted on Microsoft SQL Server 2016.
3. SQL Server 2016 is the latest version explicitly referenced in the PowerDesigner 16.6 SP03 Installation Guide.
4. A migration of the repository database to a currently supported SQL Server version is required due to the end of support of SQL Server 2016.
5. An upgrade to PowerDesigner 16.7 is currently not possible.
Request clarification before answering.
Hi,
I am not from SAP, but here is my view.
Starting with version 16.7 SP01, SAP changed the repository requirements to MS SQL Server 2012 and higher. The same applies to all the other supported DBMSs (Oracle, ASA, ASE, HANA, DB2). Communication between the PowerDesigner client and the repository consists of fairly simple DDL and DML queries. They come in high volumes, but they don’t use any features specific to particular DBMS versions. So I believe the “and higher” support was there much earlier, and since 16.7 SP01 SAP has only started mentioning it in the documentation.
I wouldn’t be afraid to migrate to a newer database version, run it for a few weeks and, if no problems occur, stay with it. On the other hand, I don’t have very good experience with the “Import the repository” function, and I would definitely recommend doing the migration by other means.
This is just my experience. As I said, I am not from SAP, but I have been using, customizing, extending, scripting, installing, configuring, troubleshooting and teaching PowerDesigner for the last 20 years.
Best regards,
Ondrej Divis
