Dear @Ibrahim_Samir47,

In Public Cloud material staging is the internal replenishment step that makes sure production components are physically and system-wise available at the issue point (production storage location / Production Supply Area) before you post the goods issue (GI 261) to the production order for consumption

What material staging means:

  • When a production order is created, SAP creates reservations for its BOM components
  • Very often, components are stored in a central warehouse/storage location, while the shop floor uses a different production storage location. So you first need to move/stage the components from the supply location to the production/issue location
  • That move to the shop floor is what SAP calls material staging, it’s not yet consumption

There are two often-confused GI „moments”:

1. GI for staging (replenishment / transfer posting)
This is the posting that finishes staging by transferring stock to the production storage location / PSA often via delivery/warehouse execution if WM is involved. In delivery-based production integration, once staging is completed GI is posted for the outbound delivery and the components are transferred to the production storage location and become available for consumption

2. GI to the production order (GI 261- consumption)
This is the real consumption posting that reduces inventory and posts the component cost to the production order. In Public Cloud you can do this:

    • Manually for example Post Goods Movement / Pick Components for Production Orders or
    • Automatically (backflush) during confirmations for example Confirm Production Order / Confirm Production Order Operation

Common staging approaches in Public Cloud:

  • Pull list / stock transfer staging moves required components from central storage to the production storage location so GI/backflush can happen from there
  • Kanban replenishment is triggered when containers are emptied it keeps small quantities available at production
  • Delivery-based staging with Warehouse Management / EWM integration staging creates an outbound delivery / outbound delivery order warehouse tasks move goods to the PSA and GI for the delivery finalizes the transfer to production storage

Summary:

  • Staging = make it available at the shop floor (logistics / replenishment control)
  • Goods issue to the production order = used it in production (consumption and costing)

Best Regards,

Dawid
