Installation SAP Data Services 4.3

I would like to install SAP Data Services 4.3, and I want to make sure I fully understand the prerequisites before getting started.
So far, I know that I need to:

Download and install the SAP Installation Planner (IPS) to generate the installation files.

Install the Data Services 4.3 Server on the target server.

Install the Data Services 4.3 Client (Designer) on the user workstations.

However, I am confused about the CMS (Central Management Server). I’m not exactly sure what it is:

1. Is it a standalone product?
2. Is it part of IPS or the Data Services Server/Client?
3. Is it mandatory to use SAP Data Services, or only required if one wants to integrate with the SAP BusinessObjects Management Console?

I would like to clarify the role of the CMS in the SAP Data Services 4.3 architecture and understand whether I can install and use DS 4.3 independently for my ETL jobs and database connections without installing the CMS.

Hi @rouchad_abderrazak1042 , below you can find an answer for your questions:

CMS (Central Management Server) is the core service that manages BI/IPS information. It'll handle user authentication, security, permissions and Object Metadata.

CMS is not a Standalone product, for example, you'll not find a "CMS installer" on SAP Support Portal. Instead, CMS is a component which comes bundled with BI/IPS Installation.
Data Services does not have its own user management, so it uses the BI/IPS as its security engine.

CMS is part of BI/IPS, not Data Services. We have a mandatory Installation Sequence:

1. First, you'll install BI/IPS, since Data Services will run on top of it. At first, you must have a database ready to hold the CMS system database. During the IPS installation, CMS will be created.
2. Data Services will be installed later, on top of BI/IPS. Also, during the Data Services Installation, the installer will ask you to enter CMS credentials you created in the first step.

It is a mandatory step-by-step, even if you do not have intention to use BI launchpad. Data Services will require CMS to work.
You'll use the CMC (Central Management Console), which is the "web face" of CMS, to register your repositories so SAP Data Services Designer can find them.

Hi there,

CMS (Central Management Server) is not a standalone product and it is part of the SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform, which is installed when you install Data Services Server or if you install IPS (Information Platform Services) as an alternative to the BI Platform for a Data Services Use case only.

CMS is mandatory for SAP Data Services 4.3 and you cannot run Data Services independently without CMS, even for simple ETL jobs.
