SAP MDG has three major functional building blocks:

  • Central Governance,
  • Consolidation,
  • Data Quality Management (DQM).

The biggest difference SAP MDG on ECC vs. SAP MDG on S/4HANA is that DQM is only available on S/4HANA.

There are a number of smaller feature/functions that are not available on SAP MDG on ECC.

As general rule of thumb: New SAP MDG features will be implemented first on SAP MDG on S/4HANA. If and when they will be implemented on SAP MDG on ECC is a secondary discussion.

We therefore always recommend customers to introduce and implement SAP MDG on S/4HANA even though they currently run all the rest on ECC for the following reasons:

1. Full available features of SAP MDG only on S/4HANA

2. SAP MDG on S/4HANA can integrate with ECC for master data distribution

3. SAP MDG on S/4HANA provides customers a first S/4HANA experience without moving all their business functions: They just start small with master data management and expand from there.

I hope this helps!

The difference between both product versions is that SAP MDG on S/4HANA has more feaures/capabilities than SAP MDG on ECC (for example in data quality management: rule repository, rule definition, rule mining, inbuilt data quality remediation is only available with SAP MDG on S/4HANA. You can find more information in this SAP Community blog post. Meanwhile the gap has widened further. See scope of SAP MDG on S/4HANA 1909 and 2020. Therefore, the clear recommendation is to go with SAP MDG on S/4HANA.
