Hi All BI'ers ..

A Basic question I guess. For the transfer of data between the ECC and BW/BI and vice versa, Is it possible to go through PI 7.1 ? Is this SAP Best pratice ? or overkill on existing established methodoligies.

Thanks in advance

Hi Damie,

While you can do this it is overkil. You can transform and cleanse all your data in BI so there is no point in making it more complex.

Thanks Nice for the response. Do you know what is the SAP standpoint on this ? .. I have seen documents outlining how to do it on these formums, i.e how to integrate through PI. Also in the SAP help it identifies that there are advantages in doing so as shown below. Is it not under certain circumstances more advantageous to go through PI e.g. where there are other data sources for reporting other than ECC and they can integrate in a standard fashion with a common interface through PI ?.

Central maintenance of message flow between logical systems of your system landscape.

· Options for transformation of message content between sender and recipient

Mappings help you to adapt values and structures of your message to the recipient. In this way, you can transfer different types of files to a SAP BW system using interface mapping. However, in any case, it is necessary to transform the data into a format that corresponds to the interface of the function module that is generated in SAP BW and used for data transfer. The function module contains a table parameter with a flat structure. This means that the data have to be transformed so that they fit to a flat structure in SAP BW.

· Using proxy communication with SAP BW

Proxies are executable interfaces generated in the application systems for communication with the SAP XI Integration Server. We recommend the use of proxies for communication with SAP BW because they guarantee Full Quality of Service (Exactly Once in Order). They also guarantee that the data is delivered only once and in the correct sequence. The SAP XI Integration Server keeps the serialization as it was established by the sender.

Hi Damien,

Im not sure from an SAP perspective, but yeah if you want to obtain data from another source system (Oracle, Siebel) where DB connect is not an option then you can use PI in there to cleanse the data and get in in the correct format.

But if you are extracting data from an ECC system then PI is not needed and will complicate things.

Thanks,

Nikck.
