BW Upgrade

Hi Experts,

Our client is planning to completely re-implement the current R/3 system to ECC 6.0. They have decided not to upgrade due to the high level of customization done to the current system.

In this scenario we are trying to understand the pro and cons weather to upgrade the current BW system to 7 or remediate the current system after the ECC RE-implementation. We are also trying to estimate the time required.The current BW system is 70% cusomized and had around 30 reports in it.

Can you also please let me know some of changes that would be required to be configured to the BW system after the ECC reimplement.

Hi Santosh,

Since your customer is going for a reimplementation of the R/3 to ECC 6.0 you will have to anyway create the new datasources all over again if you are currently having a lot of customized/custom Datasources.

ECC 6.0 provides better datasources especially in the FI side which would eliminate a lot of old flows in the BW side. If FI being one of the major areas, then it is good to go for a reimplemntation.

Apart from this, if you go for a reimplementation then you can also remove a lot of unwanted objects and reports from the BW side. Since you have only around 30 reports it should be a good idea to do the reimplementation.

Hi Santosh,

From your requirement it seems like you are planning to upgrade ECC as well as BW system,

1) When you go for upgrade of BW system or ECC system the main thing during this is you will have to check whether your existing extraction process is working fine or not.

2) You will have to take care of RFC connection between these two systems.

Now when you upgrade ECC alone then,

1) You will have to replicate all your Data sources from ECC to BW. This will give you idea if any of the existing Data sources has been obsolute or is there is new replacement for existing DS.

2) Check the other system related parameters e.g. Partner Profile, background user authorization etc.

When you go for standalone BW system upgrade,

1) You will have to think whether existing modeling will be supported or do you need to rebuild some of the things. As far as BW3.5 and BI 7.0 is concerned, most of the things will work as it is and simply you can go for migration of objects.
