BW upgrade version

Hi

We are performing technical upgrade from 3.5 to Bi7.3.

Does the sap upgrade installation allows the system to be upgraded directly from BW 3.5 to BI7.3 or is it a mandatory requirement to first upgrade to BI7.0?

Appreciate feedback from anyone who could assist in this.

Upgradation from BW3.5 to BW7.3 is possible.

In BW 7.3 Authorization concept mandatory.

We also plan to upgrade BW 3.5 to BI 7.3. My qusetion is taht If we upgrade BW 3.5 to BW 7.3, do we need to modify all BW 3.5 objects to BW 7.3 (Native mode)?. Can we keep runing BW object in BW 3.5 mode? How isit running performance in BW 3.5 mode? is it same with BW 7.3 native mode ?

Hi Lawrence,

upgrade 3.5 -> 7.3 is feasible however there are some activities that you have to done e.g. new authorization concept is mandatory you cannot run 7.3 in old (3.x) concept. See above in this thread.

Regarding 3.x BW objects: all is still supported. When 7.3 was released SAP said that you won't be able to modify those object. Means only runtime of those object will be supported. However modification of those objects is still possible at least to Support Pack level 04 of 7.3. From performance point of view I didn't experience anything wrong. You just miss new functionalities if yo do not migrate your data flows to 7.x style.

Basically upgrade from 3.5 to 7.3 is possible. But you need to be aware that as new (7.x based) authorization concept is mandatory. this means that during the upgrade you must to switch to new concept. As for sure you will have no new roles already prepared then you won't be able to run any authorization checks...system will be opened...

As you said, after upgrade we won't have any new concept roles prepared beforehand, so I guess that after development upgrade we have to do the conversion to new concept, and transport the new objects to quality and production systems when these are upgraded too. Am I right? Or there are other approach?

And about authorization variables in queries? Any changes on it?

Hi Henrique,

yes you can start developing new roles right after DEV is upgraded. If you have 73 sandbox before DEV upgrade you can start there as well.

Authorization relevant BEx variables are fine in general.

I am also doing a BW3.5 to BW7.3 upgrade and wondering if you have a project plan I could leverage.

In one of the threads, I read that you need to have 7.0 authorization concept in order to upgrade to 7.3.
