AI Agent user Licensing

In most enterprises, only a small subset of employees have SAP user licenses and direct access to SAP systems. However, AI Agents are expected to be democratized and accessible to a much broader employee base across the organization, with use cases varying according to each employee's role and responsibilities.

In such a scenario, how does SAP licensing work for enterprise-wide AI Agent usage? Specifically, if employees who do not possess individual SAP user licenses interact with SAP data or processes through AI Agents, what are the SAP user licensing implications and compliance considerations?

ex. if a customer has Workday (all employees will have access to it as its HR) .. if I want to implement a AI agent use-case for Workday using SAP AI core.. what would be the license impact ?

This is an interesting question. I think the key distinction is whether the AI agent is only using SAP AI services for processing, or whether it is actually accessing/performing business operations in an SAP application.

I wouldn't assume that putting an AI agent between the employee and SAP removes the underlying SAP user/licensing requirements. The agent may change the technical access pattern, but the contractual licensing terms still need to be checked.

In the Workday example, if Workday is the system of record and SAP AI Core is only being used for the AI layer, I would expect a different licensing discussion than an agent that directly reads or updates an SAP application.

For an enterprise scenario, I'd validate the specific SAP product, API/service, authentication model, and existing contract with SAP licensing before designing the solution around a particular assumption.
