ActiveControl and SAP Cloud ALM

Hi,

We're considering implementing ActiveControl by Basis Technologies as a replacement for ChaRM.

Implementation dictates that ActiveControl be connected to Solution Manager or similar as its domain controller, though I'm wondering if anybody has managed to use Cloud ALM as the domain controller rather than solman?

That said, I know CALM capability will probably match that of ActiveControl at some point in the future..

Thanks in advance

Stephen - thanks for your question.

Full transparency, I am the CTO of Basis Technologies. I hope you find the following helpful.

- The ActiveControl Domain Controller can be installed on any NW stack (7.01 and above). This includes Solution Manager or other existing instances (GRC, MDG, …). Some customers even deploy on a leading development instance. It could even be a dedicated NW system. Solution Manager has typically been chosen but as you mention, with end of life of Solution Manager, that “default” will likely become less common. Main thing to consider would be availability / downtimes planned for the host.

- ActiveControl has numerous capabilities / differentiators compared with ChaRM and whilst SAP is in the process of building out Change & Deployment capabilities in CALM, there are a number of ChaRM capabilities which are not expected to be included in CALM. ChaRM did not have parity with ActiveControl and the gap between CALM and ActiveControl will be even bigger. We also have additional capabilities in integrated solutions like ActiveDiscover which further enhance our value. For info on the CALM roadmap and key ChARM functionality which will not be ported checkout slide 22 & 23 in the following deck

- ActiveControl supports cTMS integration which enables deployment orchestration between On-Premise and Cloud (e.g. SAP BTP) deployment and we will continue to explore options for integration between ActiveControl and ActiveDiscover with CALM.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Hi Stephen,

not 100 % sure, but in my past Active Control projects the Solution Manager wasn't the TMS domain controller. I guess it will be difficult with CALM, since you don't have access to SAPGUI? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi Daniel,

That's my feeling too i.e. it will be a challenge to hook into CALM, though I'd hoped that others may have done so.

We know that solman does have a finite lifespan as communicated in the SAP roadmap, so I do wonder what ActiveControl will connect to once solman is no longer an option?
