In Q2 we organised 5 SAP CodeJam events for students within SAP Central and Eastern Europe region. The Roadshow  went through four different countries - Poland, Slovenia, Serbia, Hungary, from 17th to  24th of April. All CodeJams were executed by HCP experts Jordan Jordanov  and Aleksandar Zlatkovski from SAP Labs Bulgaria, who were on tour for 10 days.

All events were hosted by University Alliances member universities: Poznan University of Economics (PL) , University of Maribor (SI), Singidunum University (RS) and Obuda University (HU) . With this series of CodeJams 130 students and 12 professors from 7 different universities got aware that SAP has to offer much more than just ERP software, and they got their first hands-on experiences with SAP HANA Cloud Platform.

Events in Maribor, Belgrade started with opening presentation about SAP, opportunities for students and promotion of  UA Student Entrepreneurship Program  and Startup Focus Program.  Right after, Jordan made an overview presentation about HANA Cloud Platform, and than the Jamming has started!

During each of the CodeJam all 3 runtimes of the platform have been covered, which is quite hard to do it in one day. There were also quite some differences regarding the knowledge level of the participants and also their expectations:

@Poznan: according to Jordan’s experience, the enthusiasm of the participants and their development skills were quite impressive having in mind that event was at University of Economics rather than Computer Science.

@Maribor: the event took place at Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of University of Maribor, and therefore participants have been very skilled and some of them did all the exercises soon after the lunch break, which was quite impressive. Students also had experience with similar events, and some of them were missing the real challenge. We will take this into consideration for sure, while planning  future events.

@Belgrade: the skills level of participants was not so high as of participants of previous two events, but students followed the exercises step by step while received great support by mentors. At the end we also had great discussion about the “new” SAP and career opportunities for young talents.

@Budapest: quite a lot of students participated also at this event, and they were also encouraged by the hosting professor as students could receive credits if they write a summary about their work and achievements after the event.

It was quite hard to predict the expectation sand skills level of participants in all 4 locations, so we'll take all feedbacks, thoughts and recommendations into consideration for the future. But the major goal has been achieved  - we have built up student awareness that SAP is so much more than just provider of on-premise ERP-like applications. They know now that also SAP has to offer one of a kind platform for the development of applications, which could be adopted by big customer base around the globe. Feedbacks were like:

  • Very interesting!
  • Ieresting – new database and platform which enable real-time processing. I will continue researching HCP capabilities, because I see quite some possibilities of usage!
  • Great presentation skills, great communication with tutors!
  • I really liked the organization and the thing that teachers were watching every our step and were there for all questions and problems with enthusiasm.
  • You are awesome, just continue, it was great time yesterday.
  • Come more often!

It seems like that it was great experience overall, not only for students but for us as organizers as well, and I look forward to organize additional CodeJams in CEE/SEE region in future. Colleagues already organised another HANA Cloud Platform CodeJamin Sofia, Bulgaria on 18th of June, and we are already planning another  HANA Cloud Platform with InternetOfThings CodeJam for students in Timisoara, Romania.

Special thanks goes to Jordan Jordanov and Alexandar Zlatkovski for  mentoring the students while they were exploring SAP HANA Cloud Platform and all UA member institutions for hosting the events!
