On Friday, 4th Oct’13, we had our first ABAP on HANA CodeJam in India. It was hosted by Colgate at their office premise in Mumbai. We, from SAP Labs, Bangalore, were conducting CodeJam for the first time and it was a very nice experience.

Event Kick-off
The event started off with a welcome note from Sanjeev Dali, Director – Global Information Technology at Colgate, addressing 17 enthusiastic developers, followed by craig.cmehil2 enlightening the developers about CodeJam – why SAP conducts such developer-focused events. With a short introduction to ABAP on HANA, the topic in focus, we left the floor to the eager participants to get their hands on the product and build some practical hands on experience with it.

It’s all about code!
The participants were all ready with installations, geared up to code. It was all about ABAP on HANA, exploring the new possibilities the platform offers to develop ABAP applications on SAP HANA, leveraging the capabilities of SAP HANA. The developers were introduced to the “ABAP Development Tools” aka “ABAP in Eclipse” – probably the first time they were working on with the tool. Additionally, the content included few getting-started tutorials of ABAP on SAP HANA – optimizing the performance of ABAP report using Open SQL, basics of HANA modeling and its consumption in ABAP. The participants used AS ABAP 7.4 SCN Trial systems for the hands-on.

Tasty Food
One of the reasons SAP CodeJam events are famous for is “The Food” and this event was no different  . While taking a break from coding to have some good food, it was also time for networking – developers coming together, exchanging their ideas, sharing their learnings – having fun.

Wrap-up
All in all, it was an eventful day – with around 6 hours of intensive hands-on [ABAP, HANA Modeling], queries, solving typical problems, and not to forget, some good discussions. It was a very nice crowd – highly interested, keen to learn more, and we hope everyone had a great time

Special thanks to pratik.talwar for the initial request and helping SAP conduct event at Colgate, craig.cmehil2 for being there at the event(at our first-time CodeJam event) and last but not the least stefan.weitland for helping us with the infrastructure. Thanks to each one of you [of course, all participants] at the event for making it successful!
