Hello All,

First post in 2014, I hope you all had a great holiday. I have a question on using the MRP controller in regards to purchasing. We are primarily a repetitive manufacturing facility and are looking to implement a discrete portion of the business. The purchasing process owners are proposing we use a three character commodity code instead of what we have normally do, a buyer code (ei 001) to sort the externally purchased materials. The problem with this is many of the same materials are used in various products and have the potential to cause confusion among the purchasing people (Who is responsible for what materials). We are trying to demonstrate the ineffectiveness of implementing this way, but want to make the we are proposing the best solution as well. Can anybody share their thoughts on using the MRP controller by products for externally procured materials (Pros and Cons) rather than by buyer?

Hi,

MRP controller is the person in charge of the MRP run for the materials. It is still a further division on  MRP and related to work load. You can have one MRP controller for materials with different MRP groups and  materials are assigned to a person or a group of persons who is/are responsible for monitoring material availability. Every material that is relative to the planning run must be allocated an MRP controller number in the material number.

Hi,

Please make a note MRP controller in sap have been created for the MRP which finds the requirements and the planning procurement proposals , and who do the MRP run for the same . Normally MRP controller will be from the Plant manufacturing person who deals with operations and looks into whather the required materials are to be internally procured or to be externally procured .

In an organization , requirements like this will get generated through the users departments which usses the materials and Buying is a separate activity rather the duty of another department which specially procures the materials externally for whom , the planning is not the activity as a whole .

That is why the MRP controller have been made separated with the duties with the buyer .ept

In purchasing purchasing activity will be done by the purchasing organization and by the buyer rather the purchase group .

In concept / or in theory you can create a P grp with a name and a MRP controller with the same name to run the MRP as well as the buying actiovity .

But imagine you are mixing two differenent activities in a single role .SAP is designed based upon the normal industry practice for the departmemnts . Better to keep them separated with differentiated duties .
