The standard way of deriving segments are through profit center. You can assign segments on profit center masters. But for many companies this logic may not work. You can also enter segments directly when entering posting line items just like you enter a profit center or cost center. Just need to make sure that segment fiield should be set us optional or required in field status. There are also several Badi's available to derive segments.
