Hi
Every transaction will be stored in the form of document in the SAP R/3 System. I mean minimum two two entries i.e. debit and credit balance would be zero.
The storage location is nothing but document.
We have different transactions to post entries.
GL Entries
AR Entries
AP Entries
Asset Accounting Entries
Controlling Entries
Material related Entries
Sales related entries.
SAP R/3 System identies the document type for to book the different types of transactions. we are going to call as document types
SA - Stands for journel entries - GL documents (T.code: OBA7)
AB - allows all types of postings (in general reverse type of transations)

Hi,
In SAP Standard the document Type AB reverses document Type SA (G/L account document)

Hi,there no differences, you can use these DocType for different aims. For example AB for clearing vendors and customers accounts, and SA for corrections...

Hi,
The best way to find out the difference is by checking standard SAP delivered settings at the following places and see what SAP recommends. You can always modify the properties and either use AB and SA according to their standard settings or create your own document type and replace them:
1. OBA7 - describes the document type properties. SA can be used for intercompany transactions (just an example of a difference).
2. OBU1 - Default values for different transactions - For example, AB is defaulted for sample document and transfer postings. SA is used for journal entries.

Hi,
SAP delivers several document types within the standard package. Some of them, can even duplicate each other. You can check in OBA7 the difference between the two you mentioned. The defualt for AB, for example, is the usage of Trading partner field. It's up to you to decide which one you want to use; you are free to delete document types that you won't be using in your system.

Eli
