Hi,

My organization is starting a Data Migration phase from Oracle 12c to SAP. Our vendor is proposing the use of Excel sheet upload as the standard provided by SAP. The issue is that Excel sheet is not compatible with Oracle language set 100% and even when the excel sheet is created using a data migration application that we create, still exceptions exist (database rows are saved on more than one excel row, some characters not not displayed correctly specially that we have Arabic text.. etc.).

The data migration application that we create can create a JASON or a structured XML file (in this case there is not issue in the created data).

My question is about sharing your experience and advice:

1- Can we use structured XML as a standard way of uploading data into SAP HANA or is it only excel sheet upload that is available as a standard data migration medium?

2- What are the other standard ways provided by SAP for data migration?

3- What are the best external cost effective data migration tools that can be used instead of the standard way provided by SAP?

4- What are the recommended Dos/Do NOTs that you recommend form your experience?

5- What is the best way of testing the success of data migration (especially in the case of using Excel sheet upload).

Regards,

Mohammad Mahmoud

Hello dear mohammad23sap

I´d like to give you a piece of contribution in your question.

1- Can we use structured XML as a standard way of uploading data into SAP HANA or is it only excel sheet upload that is available as a standard data migration medium?

Its possible to use XML file. find more in the link Filling XML Template Files with Data | SAP Help Portal

2- What are the other standard ways provided by SAP for data migration?

SAP S/4HANA Cloud customers can use the included SAP S/4HANA migration cockpit to migrate data. If the customer chooses to use the Migrate Data Using Staging Tables approach, the SAP S/4HANA migration cockpit creates staging tables for the migration objects that are relevant for your project and migrates data from these staging tables to the target SAP S/4HANA Cloud system.

If you use the Local SAP S/4HANA Database Schema option, the SAP S/4HANA migration cockpit generates the staging tables in the local ABAP schema of the SAP S/4HANA Cloud system. We recommend using this option if you want to populate the staging tables using the template files provided by SAP.

If you use the Remote SAP HANA Database Schema option, you specify the relevant connection to a remote SAP HANA system. The SAP S/4HANA migration cockpit generates the staging tables there. The set-up instructions provided for this scope item are only relevant for this option. (brief explanation from scope item 2Q2 Process Navigator - SAP for Me).

3- What are the best external cost effective data migration tools that can be used instead of the standard way provided by SAP?

My recommendation is to use a standard way provided by SAP. Check the scope item 2Q2 Process Navigator - SAP for Me.

5- What is the best way of testing the success of data migration (especially in the case of using Excel sheet upload).

Using the standard way provided by SAP, will be possible to simulate the transfer of data, to check any inconsistence may detected by the system. Check the scope item 2Q2 Process Navigator - SAP for Me.

Thanks a lot Julio for your contribution.

I would like to focus on your comment "If the customer chooses to use the Migrate Data Using Staging Tables approach", what are the other approaches that a user can choose to migrate data between Oracle and SAP?

Thanks,

Mohammad
