Hi ,
I was asked in one interview, "What is the difference between component allocation & material allocation?".
Component allocation means, allocation of components to various operations in a routing or production order.
Material allocation , i really could not trace it out.
Can somebody guide me, what exactly does it mean?
Best regards,
K.Kumar

Hi Kumar,
The component allocation what you have mentioned is correct. It is child material allocation to operations of routing.
Like to make X - you need Y and Z. There are three operations - 0010, 0020, 0030.
Y is allocated to stage of 0020 and Z at stage of 0030.
This is a simple example of component allocation.
Material allocation means the assignment of various materials (Header Materials) to a Routing group.
Material assignment is basically you can assign multiple materials to a routing, basically header material assignment to a routing.
Example - you can along with material X, can also allocate materials A, B etc to a Routing group.

Kumar,
You got it correct on Component allocation. There is something called as Material assignment and Production allocation, I am not sure what the interviewer had in his mind.
Material assignment is basically you can assign multiple materials to a routing, basically header material assignment to a routing.
Product allocation, is basically this is used in SD as a part of ATP. Sales persons would be able to allocate the quantity specific to customers, so as to enable them control the sales based on the allocated quantities
