Change Log - Differences Window

Hi Everyone,

This feels like such a basic question, but I haven't been able to find the answer. I'm viewing the Differences window from the Change Log and there are some rows that are in black font and some that are in blue font. What does the blue font signify?

And to help me understand the differences screen a little more, in the specific example I'm viewing there are 9 different instances. When I view the Differences (by pressing Show Differences), it appears that one field is constantly updated with the same value. What doesn't make sense to me, however, is why the field is constantly being updated with the same value?

For example, I'm viewing the differences on a specific item in the Item Master. Per the 7th instance, the Valuation Method was changed from Moving Average to Standard. Then on the 8th instance, the Valuation Method was again changed from Moving Average to Standard. And it was changed one last time on the 9th instance. It went from Moving Average to Standard. What I don't understand is why this had to be changed so many times. If the Valuation Method was changed on the 7th instance, then there should not have been a need to change it again on the 8th and 9th instance since they were all the same change. Why would the old value in all of those instances be Moving Average, when it clearly shows that it was changed in the 7th instance? Shouldn't the 8th and 9th instance not have shown any change then? I would understand if in the 8th instance we went from Standard back to Moving Average and the old value would show Standard and the new value show Moving Average, but that did not take place.

I hope I'm explaining this well. Does the Differences Window in the Change Log show the collective changes from one instance to another. So in the example above, it shows the valuation method being changed in the 7th, 8th, and 9th instance because it shows collective differences amongst all of the instances instead of just showing the differences from one instance to another?

If I'm at all not clear in my question, please let me know so I may try to clarify.

Hi Amanda,

By default, B1 change log will show difference from the ORIGINAL record no matter how many times you change different fields. It means if you had changed one field once, it will show the same change until the last instance from then on.

Thank you for your reply. That's what I assumed was happening but wanted to verify.

I have another related question to the Change Log. When I am in the Change Log screen and double-click on a row or instance, it brings up the History Instance screen. For example, if I am I looking at the Change Log for the Item Master it brings up Item Master Data - History Instance # 1.

After going through the Change Log I know that the Valuation Method was changed from Moving Average to Standard in Instance #7. However, if I view the Item Master Data - History Instance #7, the valuation method shows Standard. The same goes for instances 8 and 9 (the last instance). However, when you bring up the item it shows the valuation method as standard. I'm assuming the Item Master Data - History Instance screen is supposed to show what the screens looked like after the change? Even if they are supposed to show what the screens looked like before the change, instances 8 and 9 should then show the change, correct?

Hi Amanda,

The different colours are depending on where changes have been made. Header level e.g. shows the changes in Black, changes for contact persons,users etc., in green, addresses e.g. in blue.

The logs are ordered so that the most recent one is the first, in the first instance you will have all the changes that has been made since the beginning of the Item. Then when going further down there are only the changes that had been done until that instance. (this is when choosing show differences when selecting the first instance)

If you do not want all these records repeated I suggest not selecting the first instance but the second or the third and so on to see the change that was done on that instance, depending on the amount of instances it might make it more clear.
